F1 vs. NASCAR

@bobpockrass
F1 schedule is out ... and Austin is the same weekend as NASCAR in Texas.
Reads like not much thought went into that weekend's schedule. Just sayin.

Texas' Eddie Gossage NOT happy with #F1 racing in Austin same weekend as Texas Cup race: His statement:

“It’s a foolish move by Formula One. Our two NASCAR Sprint Cup races draw the two largest crowds in Texas sports. It isn’t the smartest move to try to compete with that. I’m sure regardless of what they say publicly, the folks at the Austin track are pulling their hair out over this one. They don’t have any say over their date. “

I have a feeling TMS is the one that's worried. F1 will probably draw a lot of fans south of the border whereas NASCAR's attendance at TMS has plummeted.

@nascarcasm

Ecclestone: "I'm not trying to siphon NASCAR audience. Now, some words from F1 drivers Vettel Earnhardt Jr. and Pastor Maldonallmendinger."

Agree but I think it partly depends if Sergio Perez finds another F1 ride. Adrian Fernandez is trying to talk him into looking for an IndyCar ride.

Watch November 2nd be the day Dallas hosts Houston. TMS would really be ****** then.

That would be a kick in the nads. I have a feeling that Eck is testing to see if F1 has a chance to make it in America. If they can't draw a decent crowd while TMS does, he'll know where they stand.

Interesting move. I thought only dirt tracks were the ones that scheduled on top of each other.

I think TMS stands to lose more. Gossage's statement tells me that he's worried. Very worried. If there was a Dallas and/or Houston home game, or the Houston @ Dallas game, I could see TMS being half-empty. It's more likely that "casual sports fans" are going to the NASCAR race at Texas than the F1 race in Austin.

Let's not forget, the attendance at the most recent Texas race was pretty bad. And they've already changed their Spring date because of March Madness.

It's a marketing blunder for F1 to schedule their race on the same weekend as the nascar race. Whoever came up with that idea should be fired.

Why go up against another major racing series on the same weekend? Purposely putting the F1 Texas race in a position which will guarantee a loss of attendance is just dumb, no matter how it affects the attendance at the nascar race.

F1 could have avoided this if they didn't schedule Abu Dhabi for the final GP of the season. Interlagos should ALWAYS be the final race of the season but the teams want to save money by concluding the season at Abu Dhabi since the young driver test is there right afterwards.

If F1 attendance suffers, Bernie has a reason not to go back and to permanently shelf Jersey. It works out great.

Now the USGP in Austin is scheduled on the same day as a more popular series has a race three hours away in Fort Worth?

It's almost as if F1 wants their attendance and viewership to be a miserable failure. :youliketh My dad (who is a big F1 fan) and I have been considering seeing a race there sometime in the future, but NASCAR will always take priority.

If the GP of America at Port Imperial had stayed on the schedule it would have been on the same day as Cup @ Dover, Delaware; ARCA @ Millville, NJ; and NHRA @ Englishtown, NJ.

Bernie is a masterful troll. F1 is never going to have a huge presence in the USA but each GP is a huge event - a spectacle - that will at least cut into viewership and attendance of same-weekend American motorsports events.

The F-1 race will be watched from every continent on this earth by MILLIONS of viewers. Bernie doesnt care who shows up at the track to watch the race, he and his series will get their money either way. Most race fans will record both races on their dvrs and watch them whenever they feel like it. I would be willing to bet that the attendance at Cota wont be affected by a Nascar race anyway

If this went on in a more liberal state then I say F1 has a chance, but NASCAR wins this one.

Nah, F1 pulls people from all over the country to Austin. TMS is a regional draw because fans have 35 other races to choose from for nascar. That's also probably the reason nascar is more worried. Excess supply.

One of F1 biggest flaws was here in the USA with the races at Indianapolis more directly the tire problem.

Along with the Tony George/ Cart mismanagement for about 15 years if not more. F1 has had the opportunity to take over the USA conversation for quite some time for their type of open wheel racing.
Two quality events in the USA, in the wealthiest nation should the minimum.

It just looks like collecting their race fees is the main priority. Quality events and the benefits of attracting more sponsors for their drivers is a secondary issue. Sounds like Nascar to me.
