I know that the open motors are changing to roller cams in addition to the tapered spacer, but what can we expect from those changes in addition to the necessary changes that result from the new rules. For example, I have heard that while the roller cams increase durability, the increased weight will stress the valve springs. True? What else has the builders concerned? A follow up question....Are the plate motors unchanged from last year? Flat tappet? Etc......

Depends on how crazy they get with the cam profiles, the weight of rollers has been coming down every year but they can run way more aggressive profiles with the rollers and stress the springs. Mucho technical stuff designing cam profiles. My guess is that the package they choose will be more durable than what they had before and just the friction reduction alone will get them 15 or 20 horsepower. I am anxious to see what kind of rpms they will be running with the new engines

Stupid question, but what makes an aggressive cam profile harder on the valve spring? More violence in opening and closing?

I think it has to do with the acceleration of the lifter, flat tappets are limited to how steep the ramp can be but with rollers they can go bananas with the angles. surely they will be using something reasonable for good reliability. Valve train components have come a long way since I was doing a lot of engine building. Hopefully Bobbyford will stop by with some better answers for you, he is pretty sharp cookie even if he does like them Fords

Check out the links below................................... one of em has your beloved TRD engine being spun by a machine to test valve train

Yeah, that's from Race Engines Plus.....so, although those gorgeous TRD valve covers give the appearance of a true TRD piece, there are significant differences. Think boob job v. natural. :D

Dont be so damned picky ........................................ TRD valve covers :D

Would kill for a pair of those.....The valve covers damn it! The valve covers! LOL :D

Yep, thems hang on the wall material right there, I seen the engine and assumed it was a TRD toyota. Anyway there is some good info on some of those links. If we could find some good chassis info we would be in heaven

After 700 odd runs, and it's getting put back in. Not really aggressive, doesn't have the teardrop shape, more of an oval. Yields more duration, but does make the lifter work harder since it rises/falls alot faster since it goes from the side of the oval to the tip of the oval in almost a square-wave form. A teardrop lobe is more sinusoidal, the lifter moves up and down slower.

Freakin' awesome! Thanks man.

I agree. Thinking that you might see much more high line at Auto Club.
I keep reading your mention of going to AutoClub. Do you ever get to go to other tracks? If you find AutoClub that exciting you better get you butt to some other tracks.

No, man, I have not yet been to another track. Cool thing is that my wife has a standing offer on the table that I could go anywhere I want for a race as long as I come back with information for the family-- Kind of a recon thing, and I get to attend the race. I married well. I have kind of been stuck. I had been looking at Homestead for obvious reasons. Bristol as well. Martinsville looks awesome. Phoenix also on the table. Kind of working through what I want to do now. So, no kidding, I want to go to so many places, I end up just watching on TV because I cannot decide. Sonoma looks like it will happen this year for me because it's close (relatively). I'm up here in the Pacific Northwest, so wherever I go, I have to commit...if you know what I mean.

Not if, but when you get the chance to expand you travels you'll be in for a treat. We've been to many tracks but now we pretty much limit ourselves to Martinsville for the spring/fall races. Our limiting factor are mainly family related activities. That'll change in a few years but for now it's just the two races.

Yeah, that's kind of my deal as well. Hard to get everybody freed up. Fontana is a lock because we love SoCal, and crave something other than rain from the winter up here. Stupid question, but if you were me....and you have to commit big time to get anywhere....where do you go? Martinsville?

Martinsville is, by far, the best race IMO but everyone says you have to experience Bristol so you should probably go there first. We had season tickets to Bristol for a long, long time and only recently gave them up. We'll be going back there again in a few years but when we had to make a choice of which race that we'd rather continue to attend, it's Martinsville. It's a tough call. That's a big commitment from your distance.

Gonna do it though soon. I love this sport. My wife loves a happy husband. Bristol is easier on my schedule, but Martinsville just looks epic. Still thinking...

Well, if you ever need information on either, don't hesitate to ask. Been to both more times than I could count.

I did TMS for the better part of 10 years. After doing 72 hours of sports cars at COTA last november.....You might consider a road race, maybe hit somona and sit at the top of turn 2. TMS is the only oval I've been to.
