Kinda surprised that there aren't any grandstands in turns one or three.

Also, curious what the actual road course configuration is and is it designed to be run clockwise or counter clockwise.
Tough view from the grandstands now to the tunnel turn. I couldn't imagine the from from turn #3 down to turn #1 or vice-versa. That being said, the view from turn #1 up the frontstretch, when they go 5-6 wide looks freakin' awesome!

A couple of little facts...

The one-of-a-kind superspeedway boasted corners modelled after other famous ovals: Turn One (14 degree banking) was inspired by the now defunct Trenton Speedway; Turn Two (also known as "The Tunnel Turn") is like Indianapolis Motor Speedway (9 degree banking); and Turn 3 (6 degree banking) borrows from the relatively flat turns of the Milwaukee Mile. The varied nature of the banking means this is a track where good setups are at a premium and often require compromise to achieve speed.

Here ya go, but I can't offer a guess as to which direction. I assume -IF- NASCAR were to consider it, they'd use the 'Double Infield' or 'Road Course' configs, since they incorporate pit road. Toss some temporary stands up on the inside of oval turn 3.

Just another pipe dream...

Dual Infield config - clockwise. The video doesn't say what the vehicle is. Tell me with a straight face that you wouldn't want to see this as one of the races at this track.

In the 1970's, I raced Pocono's 'Road Course' configuration in both directions, although clockwise was the normal direction. AAMRR and WERA motorcycles. The infield portion was quite different then, with a brutally fast 180 degree horseshoe righthander after passing the pits, and then an impossibly tight hairpin to the left.

The Pocono road course would make a good Nascar race, but I love Pocono as the "tricky triangle." I'd hate to see this get the Indy-style restrictor plate treatment.

While I was Googling these, I hit a page saying the R/C portions had been repaved at 45' wide. I don't recall the exact date but it was within the last five years.

I recently came to the conclusion that the ideal place for grandstands would be to wrap them around 2. They could re-jigger the pits to put them in front of the fans, similar to Daytona. Of course such a major overhaul would be a phenomenal expense, but maybe a few stands around 2 would be a compromise. I was told by some old timers there used to be stands out there years ago. All (a lot of?) the action seems to happen either in 2 or coming out of 1. That said, it's still a fun track for me. Lots of good memories and an easy drive from home.

Does anybody know if regular race tickets will get you in for the qualifying on Sunday morning?

Storyline - Pocono Poses Unique Challenge: Pocono Raceway has always been one of the most unique tracks on the NASCAR circuit, with its has three distinct corners. Each turn is based on a different race track - Turn 1 on the former Trenton Speedway, Turn 2 on Indianapolis Motor Speedway (where the Cup cars raced last weekend) and Turn 3 on The Milwaukee Mile. The challenge for Goodyear in bringing a tire set-up that matches up well with Pocono is that the track features long straightaways that produce high speeds, but is also relatively flat. Goodyear's tire set-up for Pocono features a left-side tire that helps the cars with grip, while the right-side tire features a hybrid construction with some characteristics of a short track tire (grip) and a speedway tire (durability).

"We tested at Pocono prior to last season's races there, just to keep up with the track since it has been about five years since it was re-paved, and this tire set-up came out of that test," said Greg Stucker, Goodyear's director of racing. "Pocono provides a challenge for tires because of its diverse conditions. Not only is it one of the fastest speedways at which we run, but it also requires us to bring enough grip for some of its other characteristics, namely the three distinct corners and the lack of banking."

Notes: Teams in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and Camping World Truck Series will run the same tire set-up at Pocono this weekend . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires Cup teams ran at Pocono in June and twice last season . . . Cup teams also ran this right-side tire code (D-4710) at Indianapolis last week . . . for the Trucks, they ran this same right-side tire but with a different left-side at Pocono last year . . . compared to what they ran in 2016, this left-side tire code (D-4708) features a compound change for more grip . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners on all four tire positions at Pocono . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

I am looking forward to a nice clean race. Indy was probably the worst race I have ever watched. Caution after caution was just unwatchable.

Some Nascar fans like wrecks, caution flags, and restarts. Rockingham was always famous for producing a lot of 'em, and folks love The Rock. I'm just sayin' :idunno:
