#22 Docked 25 points and fined $10,000: NASCAR officials announced that NASCAR Winston Cup Series owner Bill Davis, along with team crew chief Frank Stoddard and driver Ward Burton, received penalties for an infraction that occurred at Sunday's NASCAR Winston Cup race at Martinsville Speedway. The #22 Caterpillar Dodge of Bill Davis Racing was found to have unapproved front springs during post-race inspection and all three individuals were penalized under Section 12-4-A of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series rule book, "...Actions detrimental to stock car racing..." and Section 12-4-Q, "Any determination by NASCAR Officials that parts and/or equipment used in the Event do not conform to NASCAR rules." The coil winding of the front springs was not evenly spaced and did not meet the standards set forth in the rule book. Davis was penalized 25 NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship car owner points; Burton was penalized 25 NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship driver points; and Stoddard was fined $10,000. Davis now has 2,966 championship car owner points and drops from 26th to 27th in the standings. Burton also has 2,966 points, and drops from 24th to 25th in the drivers' championship standings.(NASCAR.com)(10-22-2002)

Dang, that sucks :(

I think that it's unfair to penalize the drivers, they don't know what they are doing to the car.

I just don't understand why this wasn't found in pre-qualifying or pre-race inspection. Couldn't there be another explanation?

they don't have to show the springs before the race.

John Darby is very picky also

That sucks, it was nice to see Ward up near the front again. Maybe I'm thinking of another crew cheif, but hasn't Stoddard been fined a few different times?

Very interesting, again I don't agree with everyone getting fined in the matter, just another odd NASCAR rule.

Yep TWF, goes with the territory.

Just plain old curious. How would one separate the driver from the team in a penalty situation such as this? Now we have seen money broken out to individuals, but I can't see as how one could award an owner points and not the driver, or vice versa, for a rules violation.

It is thought for prerace violations where points are deducted maybe, gotta poner that a bit. But certainly not post race.

Getting a penalization like that in one of your first few races as the crew chief for that team. Not the best way to get on the right foot.

It is a tough call on whether or not everyone should be fined. If something is found to be illegal, how is it possible to "prove" that the driver/crew cheif/owner didn't know anything about it? I guess I would have to say that this is really the only fair way to approach penalities of this nature.

Seems to me that we as race fans bitch and moan when The Hallowed and Revered Sanctioning Body is inconsistent. Now we're doing the same thing when they are?!

Some of these penalties are ticky-tacky, but the line must be drawn somewhere. Once it is drawn, it must be enforced. If it is to be enforced, it should most assuredly be done so equally, consistently, and unilaterally. I may not like where the line has been drawn, but so long as every team/owner/driver/manufacturer is subject to the same line, and the same penalty for crossing it, I'll be OK with it.

Even if it IS Ward. ;)

Well I know why they cheat. Always have.

It's the Chick-Factor.

Cheating is dern near the only innovative thing a team can do anymore. "un-approved parts" is about the last edge they can hope for.

Sadly, it would appear that almost every change that Nascar makes moves us one more step to Iroc. I don't see things every going back to the way things were. Iguess I'll just have to sit back and enjoy what's left of the ride. :(
