#24, #48 Teams Penalized For Infractions At Infineon Raceway: NASCAR has issued penalties and fines to the #24 and #48 Hendrick Motorsports teams that compete in the Nextel Cup Series, as a result of rule infractions found this past weekend at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Both cars – the #24 driven by Jeff Gordon and the #48 driven by Jimmie Johnson – were found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); 20-2.1E (parts or components of the car not previously approved by NASCAR that have been installed or modified to enhance aerodynamic performance will not be permitted); and 20-2H (fenders may not be cut or altered except for wheel or tire clearance which must be approved by the Series Director) of the 2007 NASCAR rule book. The violations were found during the initial inspection process last Friday. As a result, Gordon and Johnson have each been penalized 100 driver championship points. Their respective crew chiefs – Steve Letarte and Chad Knaus – have each been fined $100,000, suspended for the next six Nextel Cup Series events until Aug. 15, 2007 and placed on probation until Dec. 31, 2007. In addition, Rick Hendrick, owner of the #24, has been penalized 100 car owner championship points as has Gordon, who is the owner of the #48.(NASCAR PR)(6-26-2007)

I'm glad to see that they got at least what the 8 team did.

I think those penalties are probably appropriate and are a good sign that Nascar is going to be consistent- noncompliance is noncompliance as far as the COT goes.

As far as the "additional" penalties that the 24 and 48 got at the track- I suspect Nascar will be consistent with that too, should it happen again.

No suprise

Hendrick Motorsports team owner Rick Hendrick issued a statement in response to the NASCAR penalties assessed the No. 24 and No. 48 teams earlier today.

"We are disappointed in NASCAR's decision and feel the penalties are excessive," Hendrick said. "Right now, all of our options are being evaluated, including out personnel situation and a possible appeal to the National Stock Car Racing Commission."

We'll take some time to decide on a direction and make an announcement regarding our plans for New Hampshire later in the week."

Man, those Hendrick spin doctors are earning their pay this year.

Consistant with #8 penalties.

How was Knaus not on probation already from the other infraction?

I sort of expected the penalties to be just a little more severe than that, just because they might try to send a message that they won't take it anymore. But this seems pretty fair to me I guess, as much as anything NASCAR does is really "fair'.

He's now on double secret probation...

Oh and to all the HMS haters who were predicting dire consequences over this--- Bwahahahahaha

Y'all should have known better. ;)

[whisper] psst, Mag, you're supposed to go along with it. Feed into the delusion so we can see how far it goes. [/whisper]

I am glad they got at least what Junior got. If they had been given anything less, there would be more complaining about favoritism.

It is very strange how Nascar never seems to take into account Chads' past discretions, yet when it comes to Kurt Busch it is a total different story. I could never understand that. The only way i can figure it is CK is a much likeable and marketable guy that Nascar can promote and make money off of. Where as KB is such an arrogant SOB sometimes who must get under the Frances' skin. Cotroversey is good for the sport , but it is high time Nascar showed some balls for once by giving Chad a little extra time off, like say 10 weeks instead of 6. I think that would of been justifiable given his past history , other than that i think Nascar was consistent in its' penalties.

The difference as I see it is Kurt's actions are on the track and oh yeah pit road. Chad is just following the time honored tradition of trying to make his car better. He doesn't endanger anyone.
