Last night I watched ESPN's 30 for 30 movie, The U. For those who don't know (if you're reading this of course you know) the U is the University of Miami. Long story short, it just reminded me of why I disliked the school for so many years. Aside from being a huge thorn in the side of the Oklahoma Sooners, the kids were real hoodlums who were terrific athletes but were allowed to keep their thuggish attitude on the field. They acquired the reputation of being thugs and it is now part of their legacy. And those alums are still proud of what they did. That team of the 80's was certainly a dynasty and its a real shame that they aren't really remembered for their athletic ability, but rather their arrogance and thuggish behavior. That team is responsible for many of the "taunting" rules not only placed by the NCAA, but also the NFL. Their ****iness was blaring and seen often when they won, but when they lost, their tears were well deserved, and I for one laughed each and every time they lost.

I love to see pure emotion in the game and there is a lot of room for that, but its another thing when it becomes staged and is pure taunting. The thing with the U is that in the beginning, it was refreshing and new, but like most things, the longer it went on, the worse it got. And thus, it had to be stopped. What bothers me the most is the attitude the former players still have. It only goes to show you that you can take the kid out of the hood, but you can't take the hood out of the kid. For those kids who became men and have gone on to bigger and better things, I'm glad, but I fear that far more of them have gone back to their original ways of thuggery.
