Penalties Announced NASCAR announced Tuesday that Brian Pattie, crew chief of the #41 Dodge driven by Reed Sorenson in the NASCAR Busch Series, has been fined $35,000, suspended from NASCAR until October 26 and for the next six NASCAR Busch Series events, and placed on probation until December 31, 2005 following rule violations at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 26. Pattie was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing), 9-4-A (the crew chief assumes responsibility for the actions of his team members) and 12-4-GG (any possession of or use of one or more tires that have been altered externally by unauthorized treatment) of the 2005 NASCAR Busch Series rule book.

Additionally, Sorenson was penalized 50 NASCAR Busch Series driver championship points and team owner Chip Ganassi was penalized 50 NASCAR Busch Series owner championship points for violating Sections 12-4-A and 12-4-GG.

The deductions reduce Sorenson’s driver point total from 3,412 to 3,362 and Ganassi’s owner point total from 3,322 to 3,272. Sorenson is third in the driver rankings while Ganassi is fifth in the owner standings.

Also, Brandon Stafford, a crew member for Sorenson, was suspended from NASCAR until October 26 and for the next six NASCAR Busch Series events, and placed on probation until December 31 after violating 12-4-A and 12-4-GG.

The suspensions for Pattie and Stafford begin this weekend when the NASCAR Busch Series competes at California Speedway and continue through the series event at Memphis Motorsports Park on Oct. 22.(NASCAR)(8-30-2005)

I really feel sorry for Reed. I certainly don't understand the thinking(of lack thereof), behind this action of the team. Reed was running well and had a chance at the championship.

i dont like what NASCAR is doing lately, taking away points, that is rediculous, why not just fine them? but no they gotta be fined, take away points and suspending for six weeks..geez

Slammed Pattie good, and rightfully so, IMO.
I know it's a "Team" but I REALLY feel for Reed.

Fines don't work. Taking away points and suspensions are the only way to hinder the attempts by some to use "unapproved" methods.

Shadow, if an owner, crew chief, etc. knew that they could cheat and only be slapped with a monetary fine it would be an issue. Soaking tires has the intent to cheat written all over it. To me 50 points is not enough. They got caught soaking the tires. Whos to say they have not been doing it before now? They used to just fine people. It did nothing.

The problem with cheating like that is it opens up questions about Reed, rightly or wrongly. :(

Indeed, muggle, that is the real tragedy. I've watched Reed race since he was 13 in the Legends cars. I just can't see him being a party to anything like this.

But, as you say, it taints him, also. :(

how many points is enough? and if they were doing it before howcome they didn't get caught then? makes you think NASCAR'S OFFICIALS ough to do a better job at inspecting the cars, so dont tell me that they deserve it because i know for sure if that were to happen to jarret or something you wouldn't like it either so.

Kenny S. did say on INNC the other night that there had been talk in the Busch gararge area that they had suspected them of treating the tires before this, they just finally got caught.

To be honest, this isn't as big as I thought it would be. I really thought Brian and the tire changer would be suspended for the rest of the year, and the fine should've been $100,000.00. For something that was without question as deliberate as treating tires they should make a strong statment and actually make the fine STING.

I drove a big rig hauling cement blocks for a company in ME (long time ago) every truck that left that plant was 2 pallets of blocks over weight. When I asked the boss about the fine, he told me not to worry, for every truck that got caught he got 50 through so he was really making money.

I think that's how most of these car owners see it too. As long as the fines are priced so it was profitable to continue cheating, NASCAR will never stop it.

I would also make big news stories out of it using the sponsors name, ex: Home 123, NO sponsor wants to be associated with cheaters and it would force the teams to be more accountable to the people paying the bills

so they were soaking the tires? I can't honestly say I have any idea what that would do, can someone enlighten me?

Tire Soaking

Believe soaking the tires give you better grip and more speed. If you don't hit the obvious cheaters with stiff penalties it's just an invitation for the rest of them to do it.

Are you kidding me? You do not know me so for you to say that you "know for sure" that I would not like it if Jarrett were caught and fined for doing the same thing. What difference does it make who is doing the cheating? Cheating is Cheating is Cheating. End of story. If your caught doing such an ignorant thing you should be punished. Knock 100 points off if the intent is to gain an unfair advantage. The keyword in any case is intent.

Intent

If intent is the keyword..than Ryan should also have received the 2 laps. I believe he "intended" to do exactly what he did......

Why not make the penalty: soak their heads in the same subtance for 30 mins; then ban them from two races.

That's true, but the solvent "soaks" into the rubber compound and softens it for much better traction.

Unreasonable? How would it bother me if my favorite driver was fined because his team was caught CHEATING? Okay, yeah it would bother me. It would bother me that my favorite drivers team resulted to cheating to try and get an unfair advantage.

you are getting upset right now aren't you?

No I am not. You are trying to tell me how I would feel about a particular situation. Only I know how I would feel and I've made the point quite clear how I would feel.
