Way back na$car had a rule only cars with a production run of 500+ were eligible. Friend is considering purchasing what he says the owner claims is a number matching '61 Ford that came out of So. Carolina and is supposedly one of those 500. Full size but no nameplate such as Galaxie etc, has a 200 mph speedo, 3 speed on the tree. And a 390 with 3 dueces?

My brief research shows they ran the 406 and I've never heard of them running 3 dueces.

Hate to see him get burned, he's a more money than brains type of guy and I think the shiney paint is seducing him. I suggested he get the paperwork and get it on a lift. Anyone know more about early 60's Fords. I admit I don't.
Oh, $15,500 is the price.

1961 Ford Galaxie
Comments: Ford got serious with performance for 1961, and released a new 390 cid V8 at the start of the year and a four-speed transmission at the end. In 1960, Ford announced that it had withdrawn support for the Automobile Manufacturers Association's (AMA) four year ban on stock car racing and promotly showed up at the Daytona Motor Speedway with a 360 bhp engined Galaxie Starliner that ran 40 laps at an average of 142 mph. The new for '61 Starliner was smaller sized, but bigger engined. Three versions of the 390 cid engine were available. The base engine came with 300 bhp, while a police version came with 330 bhp. At the top was the 375 bhp Thunderbird Super edition with a four-barrel carb. At mid-year, Ford released a triple two-barrel carb version of the 390 which put out up to 401 bhp. But despite the fact that Ford had the most powerful engine available, it was lost in the excitement of Chevrolet's 409. The Ford 390 V8 put out 375 bhp, and eventually 401 bhp, which was more than the 360 bhp that the Chevy 409 could put out. But the Chevy's extra 19 cubic inches made it a hit on the street.

Production: .
Engines: 223 I6 135 bhp. 223 I6 145 bhp. 292 V8 175 bhp. 292 V8 185 bhp. 352 V8 300 bhp. 352 V8 360 bhp. 390 V8 375 bhp @ 6000 rpm. 390 V8 401 bhp @ 6000 rpm.
Performance: 390/300: 0-60 in 9.9 seconds, 1/4 mile in 16.6 seconds @ 79 mph. 390/401: 0-60 in 7 seconds, 1/4 mile in 15.1 seconds

The old six pack.

He should get a pro to decipher the vin number to see if it's original equiptment. I doubt it would be worth more than 50k fully restored, unless it has a documented (and interesting) racing history.

All 61 Ford full size models where considered Galaxies wether they where badged or not, the Fairlane became a mid size car in 61. The HP versions came with 390's, either a single 4bbl or 3 two barrels, 3 speeds on the column later models had 4 on the floor and a 200 mph speedo. I'm not sure how many where made but your right they where required to build at least 500.
The 406 did'nt come out until 62.

These are very very rare cars, the seller should be able to provide Total Documentation on it : Original dealer, vin and serial numbers, original owner, etc. the more documented the more the car is worth!
If the seller can't provide any.....walk away there are lots of wanna be's in the resto car market.

I just noticed the $15,500 asking price, if it's a cool clean car even if it's a clone and he likes it, Buy It and have fun!
