I was reading in one of them racing magaxines and saw that Dale Jr makes 10% of the 750000000 that they make for the merchandice. Thats alot of money
Don't be too quick to give Earnhardt all the credit for his merchandising sucess. DE was at the tail end of this merchandising and business game until he hired Don Hawke, a Pennsylvania Yankee. Hawke showed him the right way to market himself and invest. Although Hawke is no longer directly involved in DEI he was rewarded by DE for his loyalty and efforts. Today, Don Hawke is a very successful man on his own, and rightly so.Originally posted by Tabasco@Feb 20 2004, 04:11 AM
DE was way ahead of the game. He wanted to be the best at everything. Why let some other co. make a ton of money off of him, when he could do it all. He wouldn't put his name on it unless it was top notch.
I wish Don Hawke was still there, he was definately a smart man and made a big difference at DEI.Originally posted by Whizzer@Feb 20 2004, 08:03 AM

I doubt seriously Earnhardt had to borrow money from Childress once he began driving for him. Earnhardt was not smart at the beginning of his career when it came to money matters and it was Childress who suggested Earnhardt get some assistance along those lines. Not because Earnhardt borrowed but because there was so much coming in Dale didn't know how to handle it or negotiate contracts for others parts of his business.Originally posted by barelypure@Feb 20 2004, 08:55 PM
As to marketing and DE don't neglect the influence that Teresa had on him. Before her he pretty much just blew thru the money. Sometimes having to borrow from Richard until the next race. Teresa showed him the value of investing. Marketing. etc.
