I was reading in one of them racing magaxines and saw that Dale Jr makes 10% of the 750000000 that they make for the merchandice. Thats alot of money

Well I can think of at least one person he will not be getting 10% from...

Would be nice to know which of them magazines you get through the mail that was written in. :) But, assuming it's absolutely correct.........so what? 10% of the sales from merchanise using one's name as a marketing tool ain't out of line for the royalties others make in other intertainment/sports industries.

But the money stays in the family. Sports Image, Action, and Chase were started by DE. His sis,Kelly runs Sports Image. They do most of the t-shirts.

Sounds like a pretty smart business venture to me..........wish I could do that!! :) Seriously, what's wrong with selling stuff you happen to produce? Then dividing up the profits among family and friends? Kinda like a dynamic trust.........but only as long as the stuff sells. I have no problem with entrepreneurship. Even among the wealthy and famous.

DE was way ahead of the game. He wanted to be the best at everything. Why let some other co. make a ton of money off of him, when he could do it all. He wouldn't put his name on it unless it was top notch.

Don't be too quick to give Earnhardt all the credit for his merchandising sucess. DE was at the tail end of this merchandising and business game until he hired Don Hawke, a Pennsylvania Yankee. Hawke showed him the right way to market himself and invest. Although Hawke is no longer directly involved in DEI he was rewarded by DE for his loyalty and efforts. Today, Don Hawke is a very successful man on his own, and rightly so.

Don Hawke is the one who brought DE from looking at piles of money and not knowing where to invest it or what to do with it for security. Hawke helped Earnhardt organize and get the footings in place for the massive merchandising and business empire DEI and the Earnhardt family owns today.

Once DE got the basics, it was bar the door Katie, the world is my oyster.

DE might have started out as a "country boy" who raced, but under the direction of Don Hawke, he flourished into a smart businessman.

I wish Don Hawke was still there, he was definately a smart man and made a big difference at DEI.

;) Howdy MM
You have quoted the gross figures and are speaking of HIS figure out of the business net! Your numbers may be correct for that gross but his net is more likely nearer to 3-4 mil a year for his part.

As to marketing and DE don't neglect the influence that Teresa had on him. Before her he pretty much just blew thru the money. Sometimes having to borrow from Richard until the next race. Teresa showed him the value of investing. Marketing. etc.

I doubt seriously Earnhardt had to borrow money from Childress once he began driving for him. Earnhardt was not smart at the beginning of his career when it came to money matters and it was Childress who suggested Earnhardt get some assistance along those lines. Not because Earnhardt borrowed but because there was so much coming in Dale didn't know how to handle it or negotiate contracts for others parts of his business.

This is when and why Don Hawke was employed.
Although Teresa is a smart business woman, she was not the catalyst in preparing the future for DEI. It was Hawke and his influence who laid the foundation and taught the lessons that Dale and Teresa followed. They were good students who learned quickly once the initial guidance at the start came from someone with that type of background.

Teresa continues, just as we all do, to learn every day.
