After the Duals last night they showed highlights of the 1988 Daytona 500, it was the first year the restricter plates were mandated. What struck me was that they were running the same speeds they run today. It was a snapshot of how they ran back then and the beginning of how the 500 has evolved to today. The teams were still single car teams and there weren't any teammates working together (there were probably friends cutting each other a break). Aside from the safety advances I wonder how the aerodynamic qualities of the old cars stack up to todays car.

Yeah, it's like asking, where are we going or have we already been there. I would like to see the cars off the ground and the front splitter gone, but hay, that is JMHO.

Thing I observed the other going through driver stats. 2 drivers you think of at Daytona and Talladega are Bill Elliott and Dale Earnhardt. Dale had only won twice at those tracks before plates were added. Bill never won on them again other then a Duel race in the 90s after plates were added.

I think Bill won the '91 Pepsi 400 at Daytona also.
