(MIAMI (AP) - Three people in two cars were detained Friday along a South Florida highway on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack. Authorities shut down the interstate as they used dogs and a robot to search for explosives.

The cars were stopped after a woman at a restaurant in Georgia reported overhearing three men who appeared to be of Middle Eastern descent making "alarming" comments, according to Mickey Lloyd of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. Eunice Stone, who said she was the only who called authorities, told FOX News Channel that one of the men said: "Well, if they're mourning it 9/11, what are they going to do about 9/13?"

Bomb-sniffing dogs alerted authorities to material in both cars, but no explosives had been found after more than 8 1/2 hours, said E.J. Picolo of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Authorities blasted open what appeared to be a backpack taken from one of the vehicles, and a robot was being used to search the vehicles. Bomb squad technicians in protective blast suits also removed a suitcase and plastic bags from one car and searched the interior and trunk.

"We're taking it very serious until we can eliminate the possibility of a threat or verify that there was a legitimate threat," Picolo said.

Picolo said all three people in the vehicles had been identified and were legally in the country, but he would not provide futher information about them. The three were being detained but had not been placed under arrest, he said.

The cars, both with Illinois license plates, remained on Interstate 75 about 50 yards apart, and the highway remained closed more than nine hours after the cars were stopped.

FBI spokeswoman Carrie McCune in Chicago said five federal agency were involved but she wouldn't release any other information.

The Florida Highway Patrol shut down a 20-mile stretch of the interstate, known as Alligator Alley, around 1 a.m. after one of the cars ran a toll plaza, Lt. John Bagnardi of Florida Highway Patrol told CNN. He said the people pulled over were uncooperative and refused to immediately allow a search.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation had issued an advisory for the two cars Thursday after a woman in Calhoun, Ga., in the northwestern part of that state, told police she overheard three men who appeared to be of Middle Eastern descent discussing their plans Thursday, authorities said.

The interstate is the main east-west route across the Everglades, running from Naples to Fort Lauderdale. The highway patrol said the road was blocked off from a toll booth east of Naples to State Road 29.

Sounds like those suspects are up to there arse in Alligators Scrab man.:D Thanks for the info.

Kinda scary either way! Good to see citizens are paying attention and being pro-active.

My daughter ask me why they were chasing the tourist in Florida Dad?If they scare them they won't go down there to visit Disneyland.I said the report is talking about a possible terrorist attack goofy. She said oh,I guess that why I am the dumb blonde in the family.:p :p

Latest press conference says "status quo", investigation is still in progress.
Wierd that the lady who reported it lives less than a few miles north of me and those detainees drove from there to FL on I75 less than a 1/2 mile from my home.

Ut Oh Kat,You don't feel like someone is always watching you,Do you? :D

They checked both cars and found nothing, they think it was a hoax now. Its nice people are listening out more, I just hope there decent had nothing to do with it.

Did all this start at 2am in a Waffle House breakfast meeting.:drinkA: :p

They're saying its all a joke. Pretty stupid idiots to joke around like that.

After spending another wonderful night at my local Holiday Inn Express, :) :) :) I scoured the major internet news sources and newspaper.coms in Georgia and Florida, and have come to the following conclusions.

On one side are three guys who say they never even mentioned anything at all concerning 911 and who's stories checked out so completely that they were allowed to travel on, and on the other is a lady who may have freaked at seeing Muslims in her small community.

Florida police have backed down from earlier statements that the men were perpetuating a hoax, and while it's all well and good (if not perhaps racially and culturally biased) to give the benefit of the doubt to Ms Stone, the fact remains that the single most expensive traffic stop in Florida history just went down and somebody is lying.

Vigilant citizen or racist? Jokesters or victums of racial profiling? Three al Qaeda members with the best dern cover story yet, or just some guys that didin't fit the mold in Clahoun, Georgia?

Another 15 minute famer I would say,I still want to know if this happen at a 2am waffle house party.

Good questions 71. One thing Muslims need to understand though is that it was Muslims (and remains Muslims) who attacked this country last 9-11.......it was our fear of being labeled racist or begoted before 9-11 that allowed the terrorists to so easily come here and do their wicked deed. I would much rather err on the side of caution than to just let it happen again. And, if the Muslims as a group, would simply condemn the fundamentalists it would help to stiffle some of the bias against them as a group. I have heard a few individuals stand up against the Islamic fundamentalists, but not the Muslim's within this country as a whole.......why the refusal? Makes it hard to trust when it's so silent from within the Muslim faith here in the United States.

That's for sure DEW2. I have no problem at all with caution, or with the steps the authorities took yesterday.

You know what happens when you step thru the doors of a major casino here in Vegas? Your face is automatically run thru the casino's security system for matches. On top of the card sharks, cheaters, high-rollers, and every day folks in that system there is also a pic of every known and suspected terrorist they can get their hands on.

And believe me, I've seen Vegas casino security in action. It's awesome. Our homeland folks would do well to take lessons.

Now the men who were pulled over are saying the woman is lying and they never said anything that she was saying. Who do we believe?
