One question that often gets asked throughout the NASCAR season is how in the world can a driver make less money than a driver who finishes behind him in a race.
I'll show you how it's done using the entry form NASCAR sent to teams for Saturday night’s Richmond Cup race as an example.
Stay with me folks. Hopefully, this should answer many of your questions (if not, ask and I’ll try to answer them).

The remaining $1.6 million comes from various funds and special awards, including some money that goes to the season-ending point fund..

NOW IT GETS COMPLICATED
Because NASCAR has different plans, this is one area where drivers can earn extra money they someone that finishes ahead of them.
# $130,000 per race is set aside to competitors on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Owners’ Winner’s Circle Plan. A slight change was made to this program this year. It’s now paid to the 12 drivers who won the most races the previous season (ties are broken by points).
Thus, the drivers on the plan who receive extra money each race are: Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Jamie McMurray, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Tony Stewart, Clint Bowyer, Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman and Juan Pablo Montoya.
Each is paid a bit differently. Since Hamlin won the most races last year, he receives $12,200 each race from this pot. Johnson was next in wins and gets $12,000 per race and is followed by Harvick at $11,800, Kyle Busch at $11,600, McMurray at $11,400 and Edwards at $11,000. .The other six drivers get $10,000 each per race.
# $240,000 goes to competitors on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Owners’ Special Plan 1. This pays teams an extra $8,000 per race. This is for drivers on teams that finished in the top 30 in car owner points the previous season. Once eligible, teams are on this plan for the entire season.
# For those not on Special Plan 1, there is a NASCAR Sprint Cup Owners’ Special Plan 1C, which pays $72,600 This is paid out to those in the top 40 in car owner points in the current season and not on the Winner’s Circle program. This changes every 12 races. So, if a car owner falls out of the top 40 in points after race 12, they don’t get this plan money for the next 12 races.
This pays $6,000 to the highest finishing competitor whose team is part of this plan with the second-highest competitor in this plan receiving $5,000, the third-highest getting $4,500, the fourth-highest getting $4,400, the fifth-highest getting $4,300 all the way to the 19th-highest competitor in this category getting $2,500.
# $492,203 is contributed from Television Awards to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Car/Champion Owner program. Eligibility is based on a formula using the 2010 owner points, 2009 owner points and bonus points for each Cup champion. The top amount paid out by this program is $28,936 and those that receive it are: Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, AJ Allmendinger and Matt Kenseth.
