A rather unflattering viewpoint

That's not much different than some of the stories the American press has done over the past week.

"In the best recent movie about Nascar, Talladega Nights..."

How about thaT? BBC News has more coverage of the Daytona 500 than the American media does.

The American press wants NASCAR gone. They're obsessed with basketball and football (which, let's be honest, are more-so black sports than anything). NASCAR and NHL will always be the red-headed stepchild to the American media because NASCAR isn't diverse enough.

And don't expect to see NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX Noise and CNN talking about Alli Owens, Marc Davis or Juan Montoya any time soon. That would go against their "racist, sexist redneck Confederate south" perception of NASCAR.

Only reason Danica gets any publicity is because she takes her clothes off on every magazine cover.

I would drool over Danica, if my bosses didn't have me limited to only 1 channel to watch. I can't even watch NBC- my bosses say they don't want me getting any ideas.

I follow F-1 as much as I do NASCAR...So I've heard a lot worse. The British are pretty respectful compared to some of the other European countries:rolleyes:
You should here some of the arguments I get into on F-1 forums....( They have NASCAR threads in them the same way that there is an open wheel thread here )
The worst part is most of them have no respect for American Drivers. That pisses me off.
I'll give you a sample.

Here's one
This is on a thread about USF-1 from a guy in South America.

"Well, if there is a "nationality" that can shine at the technical side of F1 is the gringos's. F1 car building and even set up is all about individuality and dirty tricks.

What the US lacks is drivers (just like UK before Hamilton, for example). Those guys cannot drive a car in a circuit if their lives depend on it, it's a matter of training (and the huge cars everybody drives). However, there are plenty of countries with a car and no drivers (France comes to my mind. Italy is in the same predicament)."

I thought the article was well written and very true. Of course we all know the sterotype of a NASCAR fan...redneck beer drinking southerner who flies the Stars and Bars. Hey, have you been to a track lately? Then you've seen many of those people and they are very prominent to say the least, so trying to disuade that image will certainly take a long time if it's ever accomplished. And also, we all know the aristocratic image the Brits have, so the way the article is written is no shocker. But the meat of the article holds plenty of water and we've been chatting about it not just recently, but for some time now. Ticket sales are down and tracks have reduced prices to get the stands full, sponsorship is down and unsponsored cars are showing up etc. And to think that people from other countries should at least acknowledge how good NASCAR is? These are the same people who think that football is played with a round ball. :) The thing is, I believe that people are reading more into the article than is written. Step out of your fanitical NASCAR room for a minute and think about what was written. Once you have done that, then you can go back in and be that fanatical that we all love. :beerbang:

I dont care that they think about US racing like that. I think everybody has made peace that racing will never be accepted by the stick and ball fans as a sport. The only problem with that is NASCAR cant make peace with that. We all know if it doesnt get popular everywhere, then those people will stay away. Unfortunately we already got the wine and cheese crowd but we know that its not gonna last to much longer.

heck, from England that wasn't too bad..... ya seen some of the write ups in local papers or TV? lol....... even in the "heart of NASCAR" down here, sometimes they just make me want to cuss.....lol

Hmmm dangerous territory here.......:growl:

I've pretty much given up trying to make the uninitiated fans of motorsports. They just don't get it. I will watch anything that has 2 or more vehicles with internal combustion engines trying to outrun each other. If the hair doesn't stand up when the engines crank................... Don't bother.

You may want to rethink that statement. The World Solar Challenge is quite a race to watch. Even if the speed is limited to 81 mph.
