ack! darlington resurfacing!

I don't care if they take the charlotte right and vegas left side tires and wear them down to the cords after 1 lap.

Why don't they just demolish all of these good tracks & make a track of tommorrow where the surface is smooth as glass, doesn't wear crappy goodyears and any joe schmoe could wheel a car around for a win. That would be awesome !!!!

i believe that is called talladega.

They repaved it sometime in the mid 90's. It only took a year or two for the track to get abrassive again.

why do they bother?

unless they treat it like a baseball diamond and keep it under wraps, the SC weather is just going to make it be sandpaper in no time.

I made the mistake of rubbing my hand across the pavement --- DON'T EVER DO THAT ! ! The seashells made mincemeat of my hand.

Yes, I managed to draw blood and scratch the living daylights out of my hand. I just HAD to see if it was really as bad as everyone said --- it was. *sigh*

Good thing you didn't think you were at the Brickyard - ouch!

Track will get new pavement and other improvements. To show how quickly the surface can fall off, this was part of a blurb on espn.com about the improvements:

Darlington was last repaved in the fall of 1995. The first race run on the new pavement was in the spring of 1996, a race for which Ward Burton won the pole with a record speed of 173.797 mph. That record stands to this day.

I say about time, the bumps are terrible, they should take some of the asphalt from up here in NE. and ship it down there. What makes that track unique is its' two destinctively different shaped corners. I say pave it with less abrasive asphalt and make it just a half a car width wider.

good idea, i think it was the bahrain F1 track that had it's pavement brought in something like 1000 miles away?

The asphalt gets abrasive because of the track's surroundings. There is a lot of sand content in the area and it cause the track to get gritty. Rockingham isn't too far away and it was always the same way. Atlanta has some of those characteristics, but not as bad as those two. Aside from laying down concrete, there isn't much they can do about that.

They had better do something to the place or it's going to lose the remaining date they have.

Track Repaving, New-Tunnel Top List of Projects at Darlington Raceway – Track Receives Largest One-time Capital Investment in Its 58-year History: Track officials have announced that the Board of Directors of International Speedway Corporation (ISC) has approved more than $10 million in funding for capital projects at Darlington Raceway. Total estimated spending for the projects represents the largest one-time capital investment in the 58-year history of the storied facility. Scheduled projects include repaving of the racing surface and aprons, and the addition of concrete pit stalls. A new infield access tunnel, large enough to accommodate race car haulers as well as motorcoaches, will be constructed at the west end of the track. Projects also include suite renovations and the creation of additional fan parking areas. "We are extremely pleased at our company's outstanding show of support for Darlington Raceway," said track president Chris Browning. "The repaving and tunnel projects, in particular, are the continuation of a major renovation and upgrade plan that began last year with the construction of the new Brasington Tower grandstand in Turn 1. Many great things lie ahead for Darlington Raceway, and we are tremendously excited about what the future holds in store." Construction on Darlington Raceway began in 1949 and the track hosted the first-ever NASCAR-sanctioned race on a paved speedway on Labor Day 1950. Darlington was last repaved in the fall of 1995. The first race run on the new pavement was in the spring of 1996. Ward Burton won the pole with a speed of 173.797 mph -- a record run that stands to this day. The track solicited input on the upcoming repaving project from several current drivers, along with team owners and engineers and representatives from NASCAR and the Goodyear Tire Company. Work will begin in the summer of 2007, following the Dodge Avenger 500 weekend May 10-12. - Darlington Raceway, Press Release
