Air Show at Owens Field

Our family spent the entire day yesterday enjoying the Celebrate Freedom Foundation festival that is an annual event here the weekend before Memorial Day. We saw 50-60 vintage planes from various time periods and listened to many pilots recounting their war days and their experiences with those planes.
Today we found out that one of the pilots was forced to crash land his F4 Corsair near an area subdivision due to engine problems and he died in the crash. Steve and I had been working on resizing the pictures to show them to friends and fellow aircraft enthusiasts but we have lost the enthusiam. These fellas take great care to present these planes and their history in festivals all over the country. This pilot Joe Tobul, travelled with his son and grandson, both pilots as well and they were performing a formation flyover when Mr. Tobul experienced trouble.

This picture is one of several that we took of his aircraft restored from WWII.

Rest in Peace Mr. Tobul and thanks for the memories that you gave us!

DJfan what a tragic story. Sorry a great days ends with a bad memory.

I saw two Canadian's, husband and wife, fly during an airshow. Their trademark was flying wing to wing about 6ft apart. Sadly one of them died just a few airshows removed from the one I saw. Leaves a lump in your chest.

pretty plane.............:D

Seems to be the story of a lot of airshows lately....didn't a Stealth crash a few years ago?

Everything went fine at the Edwards air show this year. It was Chuck Eager (?) last military flight. He did a sonic boom in a F-15. It was pretty cool. I feel bad for that pilot that died though.

Gullwing Corsair, same as they flew in the TV show "Black Sheep Squadron".

My favorite WWII plane is the P51 Mustang.

Condolences to Mr. Tobul's family, but like racecar drivers, he died doing what he loved.

This years was fun but I got tired of the parachute jumps. They must have done 10 or more jumps.
