27 years ago today, 4/1/93, we lost the defending Winston Cup champion and one helluva smart guy. It would be part of a 18-24 month stretch that saw the passing of Davey and Clifford Allison, Neil Bonnet and the life altering Ernie Irvan crash. The awful stretch in the late 90's and early 00's that culminated in Earnhardt's death is often talked about in the context of safety evolution. The tragedies in the early to mid 90's were in large part business related; aviation mobility and the Goodyear/Hoosier tire war. Nothing even remotely good came from these tragedies. The lasting thoughts remain more about how history was drastically altered....

Alan's career along with Davey Allison's are some of the biggest "What If" in my mind. Im not sure Earnhardt would have 7 or Gordon 4 if one let alone both of those fellas lived. I have mad respect for what Alan pulled off in the 92 season, nothing short of a miracle. He literally outworked every single team to win that Championship, one of the coolest stories ever.

Holy crap! That pic of his hauler going around the track for one last time and getting the checkered flag is heartbreaking!
