Huge (7.9) in Alaska yesterday, but OUR Alaska has assured me that even tho he felt it there was no damage there where he lives.

SCAREY

It was quite a shaker. I was home alone as the house started shaking and groaning. Hanging plants were nearly banging against the wall. A few folks had mirrors and pictures falling.

No severe damage here or in Anchorage or Fairbanks but the highways in between took some hits. There are places with 1 foot wide cracks 20 feet deep running down the middle of the roadway. The TransAlaska Pipeline shut down automatically but there appear to be no leaks or spills.

7.9 is huge but because of it's remote location we escaped major damage or injury.

pbunch-been too warm for icequakes. Soon tho. Then, of course, our biggest fear is falling into someone's icehole.

:D :D :D :p :p

7.9 is a pretty big earthquake. My aunt's been through some big ones like that in California where she lives. Glad you are alright, Alaska.

Glad to hear youre alright there Alaska.I have run into a few iceholes, but never fell in one that I can remember.:D

wow that was pretty big...glad you are ok..............went thur the 7.0 in 89 up in northern california, that rattled a few nerves when it took down most of the bay bridge.............:(

Glad to hear you are alright Alaska. I've been through a tornado and a hurricane, but an earthquake doesn't sound like it would be much fun.

Quiet a few fishing iceholes here in the south. Used to be one myself, now just a racing icehole.

Being a California native, I've been thru a few....7.9 is huge. Not too many tall buildings in the area I assume.

glad yer ok dude.....head for a doorjam or under a bed. Outdoors is ok IF there is nothing tall nearby......Wierd is when one hits while yer driving.

I still remember that, even though I was just a little guy. That was bad. Most everything glass in our house broke but everything else was ok.

Glad to hear everything is ok with you Alaska.

No buildings more than two story wood frame within 75 miles north, 150 miles south or over 300 miles east and west.

Thanks everyone for your concerns. We are fortunate in that there's not much around to fall on us. The biggest danger here on the coast is a tsunami which did not occur in this case.

Wouldn't you see some tsunami activity if it were centered in the Aleutians?

Depends on how deep it is but a tsunami can occur even as a result of onshore quakes. Lots of factors involved.

I saw some program on TV a while back about the huge quake in Anchorage I think it was, years and years ago. Very interesting piece. The mayor was talking on camera about how no buildings over 2 stories tall, etc. Then they went into all the seismic stuff and completely lost me. Seems Anchorage or whatever city it was lies on a faultline.

At least this one wasn't that deadly. The footage they had of the other one was something else.

Glad you are okay, Alaska. Haven't been through an earthquake that big, but a few 5 and 6 ones. 7.9 is a huge one, had to have been bad to have been close to it.

I heard that it damaged parts of the pipeline, they closed it until Tuesday for repairs I believe, and left cracks in some roads 4 feet wide and 8 feet deep. But luckily it wasn't closer to a big city.
