All-Star Race To Move?
Look for the Nextel All-Star Challenge to move in 2007. Although the event will remain at Lowe's Motor Speedway next year, NASCAR is looking to move the All-Star race to Richmond International Raceway, a track that is closer to Nextel's headquarters in Reston, Va.(Sporting News)

typical NA$CAR...yet another race being taken away from the Carolinas...NA$CAR is a joke.

A Joke? Every major sport in this country that has an All Star event rotates the location. Why should Charlotte be the lone location?

it doesnt appear its going to rotate when it goes to richmond either...Nascar has 2 all star races..no other sport has 2 all star games....one at Daytona and one in Charlotte......why leave it in charlotte? because people spend their entire vacations in Charlotte and go to both races, let alone the drivers and teams get to sleep in their own beds for 2 weeks straight...its a mild vacation for them during the middle of the season.

The original intent of the Allstar Race, (The Winston) was to move it around from track to track.

If memory serves me correctly, the second year of the show, it was run at Atlanta and was a bust, didn't sell enough tickets to begin to pay the posted purse.

Humpy and O.Bruton jumped on the idea and convinced RJR that the race should be run at their track in Charlotte and they've turned it into their own personal circus ever since.

But who says the show belongs only in Charlotte?

Now we have a new series sponsor who apparently would like to try moving the show around to other venues.

As far as the drivers and teams sleeping in their own beds for two weeks straight: who really gives a hoot?
These guys are making more money doing the thing they want to do more than anything else and they usually are away from home for maybe three days out of the week; they fly to and from the track, sleep in their multi-million dollar motor coaches, and laugh all the way to the bank at the end of the season and you folks are feeling sorry for them being away from home so much?

Can't quite find the sympathy for them; it's their choice.

Man a short track All Star race IMO would be something to see.

the crew members dont make that kind of money.....actually they probably dont make much more money than you or me.....they arent laughing all the way to the bank at the end of the season....i could careless about the drivers being on the road.

Regardless how much money the crew makes, it istill their career of choice. They can change jobs any time they want.

If they take the race from Charlotte, what keeps the shoot out at Daytona now? There are other tracks that would like to have the shoot out as well.

The All Star race is just as big a part of speedweeks in Charlotte as the Shoot Out is in Daytona, actually its bigger.

who owns Richmond? Bruton or Nascar?

Most of those team members you're worried about actually fly into the track the morning of the race and fly home that night. The crewchief has a motorcoach and those who must come to the track with the car are compensated per diem. Not to mention bonuses, etc. which the team owners or drivers may feel appropriate during the season.

International Speedway Corporation bought Richmond from the Sawyer family a few years ago.

NASCAR does not own any race tracks, they sanction races.

id say about half the team members who set the car up...roughly 5 or 6 guys per team arrive at the track before race day, typically on a Thursday or Friday…some guys who pit the car actually do show up on race day.

ISC and NASCAR are both owned by the France family and their boards of directors are very similar.

Charlotte is the best choice for many reasons. Most of the drivers want the race to stay in Charlotte, my favorite track, (I live 40 min. from Bristol) the drivers and crews can stay home for a few extra days. That's enough reason for me. LOL

Nearly all of the over the wall crew are specialists who are flown in on race day and fly home that evening.

They are coached, have special physical trainers, practice pit stops several times a week and if they're any good at all, they're making over six figures a year.

Jack Roush bought a couple of airliners (727's I believe) to charter for those teams without their own planes.

DEI has two twin engine airliners (not sure of the make or model), Penske has several aircraft, RCR has a couple and many of the drivers own their own planes as well.
These people fly around in their jets like a working man drives around in his car.

NASCAR is owned by the France family; ISC is a publicly traded company in which the France family owns controlling interest.
There is a big difference in how they operate. Lots of it's required by laws governing publicly held corporations

If Na$car does move the All-Star race outta Charlotte, it would be nice to see them move the race locations to a few tracks that do not have a Cup event. Say... Nashville, Kentucky or maybe the Miwaukee Mile!
I no, I no...............it's all about the money!
One can always dream, can't he?

I think it would be very cool to have the NASCAR All Star 'game' similar to other sports (touring, one year in Bristol-at night :), then Atlanta, then Homestead, then Talladega...would be great). However, you have to remember how big the France family is on molding NASCAR like the NFL. The way it's covered, etc.

NFL Pro Bowl; in Hawaii- every year.
NASCAR All Star; will stay in Charlotte- whether I like it or not. :)

I agree. :beerbang:

Hey Smoke1TS20, it's looking like ole Tear'em Up Tony maybe leading the points standings.............before that September Richmond race!

I find it hard to believe that every crew member and all the drivers live in NC. It's not like they have to sleep in tents, cook on an open fire and drink pond water.

The truth of the matter is summed up by PDR in his post.

It is all about the money.

When RJR/Winston was paying the bills, they wanted the race in their home state.

So why is it so hard to understand why Nextel/Sprint wants to move the All Star race, which they are paying for, to a track in their own home state?
Hasn't there been an announcement to the effect that the corporate headquarters for the new company will remain in Virginia?
I believe I've seen some mention of that in the media since the companies announced the merger.

Besides, Martinsville isn't all that far from Charlotte for the teams, still makes easy traveling for them.
I'd really like to see it changed myself.

Well, if they move it for the sponser, it won't be Richmond. It will be K.C. In Sprint's back yard. They have plenty of time to add lights to the track.
I hope it stays put myself.

What I've seen mentioned is moving the All Star event to Richmond.
Nextel is headquartered in Reston, Va. (?) and Nextel/Sprint have announced that they intend to keep the corporate headquarters there, thus the reason for requesting moving the show to Richmond.

I don't know why they HQ'd sprint/nextel in virgina, sprint just built a huge campus in overland park ks. Basically I want them to move the all-star race to kansas
