NASCAR schedule changing?

A new television package and concerns over attendance and TV ratings for some events could lead to a change in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series schedule, with changes coming as early as 2007, some in the sport believe.

NASCAR typically doesn't begin the process of signing sanctioning agreements and putting its schedule together for the following year until it has visited tracks on the current schedule. However, with a new eight-year agreement that includes Fox, Speed, TNT and ABC/ESPN partners beginning in 2007, NASCAR may consider shuffling some dates to improve both ratings and attendance figures.

"I haven't heard anything yet," car owner Richard Childress said March 4, "but I wouldn't be surprised.

"I think with the new TV package, you better be prepared for what may have to happen. I think that [the TV package] will dictate not only the time of the race [on the schedule] but where we may even go as well."

The season-opening Daytona 500, which was broadcast on NBC, pulled in 37.2 million viewers and a record 11.3 household rating according to the network, making it the highest-rated NASCAR event in the sport's history. The following week's race in Fontana, Calif., however, registered a 7.4 rating, down from a 7.9 rating the previous year.

Attendance for the California race, as well, appeared to be down.

For more in-depth coverage, see the March 9 issue of NASCAR Scene

I'll do NASCAR a favor and translate this into a non-political correct, straight up reason why.

Because it sucks.

There, see how easy it was? Nothing else needs to be said or NASCAR executives dancing around an excuse. It sucks. The tracks sucks. The racing sucks. And the fact that you took away Darlington sucks.

See a pattern? Guess what's next? I'll give you a hint...it starts with "N" and ends in "R".

Wouldn't it be a hoot if it turned out that the networks were allowed to make the schedules, sort of like how ABC was allowed to schedule what football games they would show on Monday Night Football? Of course, they would choose to schedule as many races as possible, as late as possible for those west coast viewers. And, with the sport moving more and more west of the Mississippi River, NASCAR might even move it's headquarters further west in a few years. Could be that the move to Charlotte is only a temporary move. But in all due respect, when TV has to give so much money for their product, they should be entitled no less than the individual sponsors get and that is respect from NASCAR. Though NASCAR has really changed in the last ten years or so, I think that this is only the beginning and the next ten years will see even more, money calculated, changes.

The Darlington date needed to be changed. Not dropped. After Daytona NASCAR needed to have a race in a different area, or 2. Then come back to Darlington. Too many folks couldn't make both so they chose Daytona and not Darlington.
I wonder if the Texas race date will be changed to a better date according to sports on TV.

better date? All 11 races at TMS have been sell outs. I belive both 2005 races were sold out- BOTH!

Yeah, but the Masters @ Augusta is the same date as the race and TV wanted the date to be the next weekend so as not to divide the viewers. Texas said they couldn't move the date this year as the tix were already sold and it would be difficult for the fans to switch their plans. Whether or not the stands are full is really not part of the equation. The money is from the tube not the seats. And, really the fans who attend will adjust to a different date.

Yeah, but I still don't like 2 dates at TEXAS... bunch of whine bags sued to get a 2nd date.

There needs to be more geographical separation on the schedule. They have back-to-back races at California and Las Vegas. They have back-to-back races at Atlanta and Bristol. Move a couple of those around to split those up.

thats what i say. and they're rying for a second date at vegas? that would be 6 dates within 250 miles of each-other.

I think geographically, bristol, lowes, and darlington are closest together, but scheduley, the 3 southwest tracks are

I guess you need to check the FACTS. There was ONE person who sued, not a bunch. And, we aren't whine bags. :p

Here's what i think would be a pretty good schedule:

Daytona- 2
California- 1 (-1)
Las Vegas- 2 (+1)
Atlanta- 2
Bristol- 2
Martinsville- 2
Texas- 2
Pheonix- 1 (-1)
Dega- 2
Richmond- 2
Darlington- 2 (+1)
Lowes- 2.5
Dover- 2
pocono- 1 (-1)
Michigan- 1 (-1)
infineon- 1
chicago- 1
New Hampshire- 1 (-1)
Indy- 1
Watkins- 1
Kansas- 1
homestead- 1

Sorry for being dense but I don't understand what this list represents.

Interesting. Here's my idea of a schedule, not in order, but the tracks and the number of races each. First, on the NASCAR.com site, there are 32 tracks listed. One out of the US and the other is a track that I believe has been torn down, or will be soon, Nazareth. That leaves 30 tracks that NASCAR runs on inside the US. Some of these tracks no longer have races, at least Pikes Peak has lost it's date with NASCAR. Also, there are some tracks out there that no longer have dates for NASCAR and I would at this point only add one, Rockingham. So with that, here's what I would do.

2.5 mile tracks:
Daytona...open and close the season, making it the only track with two dates.
Taladega
Pocono
Indianapolis

2 mile tracks
California
Michigan

1.5 mile tracks (or those over 1 mile and under 2)
Homestead
Atlanda
Charlotte
Darlington
Kansas
Texas
Las Vegas
Kentucky
Nashville
Gateway

1 mile tracks
Dover
Milwaukee
New Hampshire
Phoenix
Pikes Peak
Rockingham

Short tracks, under a mile
Bristol
Martinsville
Richmond
Memphis
Mansfield
Indianapolis Raceway Park

Road Courses
Watkins Glen
Infineon
Road Atlanta

I believe that is 32 races and of course, we would have to have the All Star race at Charlotte and the Bud Shootout at Daytona. I like this mix of tracks and with more tracks supposedly coming into the northwest, it would be very interesting.

The people of Atlanta won't support two dates at AMS, they'll never support a road course race there.

the trans am race seems like it has a good amount of people in the stands..

howbout run cup cars on the road course at daytona like IROC are?

Didn't mean that the dates would be supported. Hell, they have races in places now that don't fill the stands. This was just my own wish list.

Vegas is getting another date, i was at the race this year and the mayor pretty much confirmed it. They aren't doing all the renovation for nothing.
