Many of us will never be tested in the way Kyle and Pattie Petty have been tested. Those that are may not respond with the grace and dignity of the Pettys. But these are truly unique and special people.
While they had explored the possibilities of building a branch of Paul Newman’s “Hole In The Wall Gang Camp” for seriously ill children in North Carolina as early as 1998, it wasn’t until after Adam Petty’s tragic death at New Hampshire in May 2000 that things began falling into place.
In an interview with Liz Allison in 2001, Pattie Petty relates that Adam had decided he wanted the purchase of twelve acres of land next to his parent’s property to be his responsibility and contribution to the camp. He was to sign the papers finalizing the deal the week of his fatal accident and the deal fell through. This prompted Kyle’s parents, Richard and Linda Petty to contribute the land that the camp would be built on. But Kyle and Pattie Petty would have to work through their overwhelming grief and find a deep strength to continue day in and day out. They were fortunate to have a large support group and a deep faith in God to draw on.
