Earlier this year, a terrible tragedy took place on a stormy Saturday night here in South Maryland. A helicopter crashed in District Heights. 4 people were killed, but somehow a 5th victim survived the horrific crash.
The story got international attention.
I later found out from a call from my best friend that it was his sister, Jordan. I was mixed in three different phases of emotion I can't remember everything. Shocking, terrible, overwhelmed, hopeful. She had been given slim chances of survival.
She not only survived, but she left that Baltimore hospital just 8 weeks later. She is home now, underdoing intense physical rehabilitation. One of her legs had to be amputated and she was in very serious condition when the scene of the crash was found 4 hours after the initial plane crash.
The entire Wells family are good religious people who would help out anyone in times of need. They did nothing to deserve what had been laid upon them. Fortunately, friends, family and neighbors returned the favor (with, of course, a blessing from God that it was not yet Jordan's time to go). The State of Maryland has promised that the Wells family will not have to pay a dime in medical bills and many people have come together to help.
She's home with family, doing better. She's able to speak again, and doctors say she will make a full recovery. With the help of a prosthetic leg, she will even be able to walk again.
Nobody is sure why she was able to survive the accident. Perhaps it was fate, or luck, but nobody knows.
Just remember folks - sometimes, miracles DO happen.
