What will Dale’s fans do?

by Jeff Owens

For true, dyed-in-the-black-and-red-wool Earnhardt fans, this has got to be the second-worst day of your life.

Of all the places Dale Earnhardt Jr. could have gone, none could possibly be worse than going to Hendrick Motorsports, the organization that you have declared the evil empire.

Earnhardt fans hate Hendrick Motorsports like fans of the Boston Red Sox hate the New York Yankees. Like Alabama fans hate Auburn. Like Oklahoma fans hate Texas.

Why?

Because Hendrick Motorsports and its drivers have always posed the biggest threat to Earnhardt Nation.

It all started when young Jeff Gordon, that wet-behind-the-ears pretty boy from California, came into NASCAR and immediately began beating Dale Earnhardt, the Intimidator, the Man in Black, the blue-collar, working-class man who could do no wrong.

Ever since Gordon knocked Earnhardt off his pedestal, supplanting him as the sport’s biggest star and denying him another championship, Gordon’s name has been mud around Earnhardt fans.

It is those fans who boo him so lustily each and every week. It is those fans who have carried that hatred over to Jimmie Johnson and every other driver who climbs into a Hendrick Chevrolet. It is partly because of Gordon that Dale Earnhardt Jr. is so unbelievably popular. Yes, he’s the son of the man, but he was also the great black-and-red hope, the driver Earnhardt Nation has always hoped would knock Gordon off his pedestal.

Now, to Earnhardt fans, their beloved driver is crossing over to the dark side, abandoning his father’s team and his loyal fan base to become part of the evil empire.

So the question is this: How will you, die-hard Earnhardt fans, respond?

Will you turn your back on Junior? Will you declare him a traitor against all things Earnhardt and vow to never buy another red T-shirt or drink another Budweiser?

Or will you finally acknowledge that Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson aren’t so bad after all, and maybe, just maybe, they might be worth your support, especially since they will soon be teammates with Junior?

Which will it be?

That figures to be the most intriguing question of all now that Junior is stepping over to the dark side.

JMHO.....But isn't that article rather inflammatory????

Jeff Owens is a rabble rouser!!!

I'm a Junior fan --- period. I wouldn't care if he drove a breadbox for Roush.

I don't root for the owner --- I root for the driver. In my eyes, he's still competing against all the other drivers.

Remember when Junior first entered the big leagues, they asked Big E about competing with his son. He said something about him just being one more car he had to beat. Same song, second verse.

I don't see the story being that much off the way some Earnhardt fans feel. I have 2 nephews who have already said they may go with Harvick if Jr goes with HMS. They hate Gordon, Johnson and HMS.

I welcomed them to the fold, along with both of my brothers and sister in law.

I no longer have to be in the fold.

I'll never turn my back on Junior, not in a million years, even if he plans to join the Hendrick gang.

If joining HMS is going to help Jr. win better, I wouldn't mind. I'd like to see Jr. win as much as he wants to.

Jr. to HMS

As much as fans like to hate Gordon or Jr....they've both done great things for the sport. As a die-hard Cowboys fan, I cringed when Dorsett went to Denver and Emmitt went to Arizona just as I would if Gordon went to Roush or Evernham but regardless, I'd still be a fan. I guess it's a loyalty issue but the question is...whose loyalty? What loyalty does Jr. owe anyone in the business? Other than his sponsors, employer and his contract, nobody. Just as in the NFL, NBA or MLB, it's usually about the benjamins. Which makes me admire him for wanting to win and taking the steps he has so he can accomplish that. I'm sure he can write his own check/contract but his heart is on winning. Too bad more athletes don't have that mentality. If a Jr fan doesn't like the fact he's gone to HMS (I refuse to call HMS the Dark side as mentioned in the column), were they truly a Jr. fan in the first place? Just look at Sr...he didn't drive for DEI yet if he left RCR to drive for his own team, would his fans have bolted? I don't think so.

I'm still a Clemens fan even though he bolted back to the land of pinstripes in NY. I'd never be a Yankees fan but I still love watching the Rocket pitch his stuff from the hill.

In the end...this move for Jr will be good for the sport and I hope he does win some championships at his new employer. His true fans shouldn't fault him for that.

Well I think Hendrick should move Mears to the 5. Put Bud back on the 25.
Besides he got himself a decent R&D driver to help Jeff and Jimmie win multiple championships.
The Man is a freaking genius...

I don't understand why Jr fans are upset. I guess they are satisfied with him at DEI, finishing in the 20's and 30's.

Because some of them, not all, feel we are the enemy.

if your a true earnhardt fan....you'll pull for him no matter what car or team he drives for.

I'm 27 years old and was pulling for earnhardt sr when i was 4 or 5 years old....I'll be pulling for Jr as long as he's racing and hopefully Jeffrey Earnhardt can be next one.

True fans stick with their driver or team through thick or thin.

Hey man you don't have to tell me that. I stuck with Richard Petty till the day he retired. I was at Atlanta for Richard's last race and Jeff's first. I liked Jeff when he was in the Busch series. I was for him for a couple of years in the cup series without wins. I stuck by him and I am still his fan.

Goodness, it seems that some folks believe that moving from one team to another is being unloyal. Just think what would happen if Jr jumped from Chevy to Ford. I guess many don't remember, or never knew that the elder Earnhardt once drove a Ford. Or for that matter, Jeffy was originally brought into NASCAR sponsored by Ford. We all can remember, can't we that Kasey Kahne was supposed to be a Ford man. Hmmmm, Rusty Wallace won his title driving a Pontiac, and then switched teams and models later to Ford. He finished his carreer driving a Dodge. There are some still saying that Bill Elliott's father is still rolling over in his grave when Bill announced that he would be driving a Dodge for Evernham. Since then, Bill has driven a Toyota as well, and of course, he has driven a Chevy as well. Jeff Burton has been around the block and the list goes on.

Fans of racing can root for a driver for a smattering of reasons. They could root for him because he's cute, he takes over for a former icon, or they could root for the driver because they like the team, meaning that it doesn't matter who drives that car at the time. We all have our reasons for liking a particular driver and that status can change for a number of reasons. I figure those who won't be a fan of Jr now are loyal followers of DEI and probably feel as though Jr is a traitor. But most of his fans will follow him no matter where he goes, or for that matter, what he drives.

Jr is now happy. Why would fans want him in a situation where there was bitterness between him and the owner. It was nice to see him smiling in earnest again.

The father, son and the holy ghost together at last...what's no to be happy about?

Let the HMS/Earnhardt love-in began
