And now more about N. Wilkesboro...

The late model races never happened. They were canceled several days prior to the race. The cause given was excessive rain.
Collins is a conman. I hope the buck backer school investigates this guy and his antics before getting too involved with him.

Well let's hope this works out, atleast something will be happening there. Should of never completley closed, dern money grubbing Bruton Smith.

The one good thing that might have come out of Collins sham is that many people have been able to see stockcars pacing the track, which might have enticed Buck Baker to check it out for his school. Who knows, if he is successful with his school there, he or someone else, including Smitty would eventually see if there is still a market for racing there.

We can all hope. It is a shame that Smitty has held on to the track for so long, and not done anything with it. It could have held a Late model series as well as Hooter races would would have drawn a good crowd.

funny thing about track owners is they want to make a profit. i doubt bruton would hold onto the track if someone wanted to buy it from him for a profit. :) i doubt he's holding onto it to spite the locals.

I don't think he is being spiteful, just greedy. At last check, he wanted 12 million for N.W. The "Rock"only sold for 4 mil. If he was not being greedy, activities that could of helped the local economy could of continued for the last 12 years. All I am saying!

Wilkesboro track may soon have a suitor

North Wilkesboro Speedway sat dormant for nearly 14 years until this spring when a Georgia man leased the property from its owner, Speedway Motorsports. Now that company’s chairman says that the 62-year-old track may soon have a buyer.

“I have people coming in tomorrow who want to buy it,” Smith said during a telephone interview on Tuesday. “I’m not sure if they have money or not — if not, it’ll be a short meeting — but they’re very serious about it.”

Smith wouldn’t say who ‘they’ are. The meeting Wednesday is not with the man leasing the track, Charles Collins, though Collins says he wants to buy the track after his lease expires in August.

Collins’ tenure at the speedway started in March with the purpose of using the facility to film a women’s racing reality series. He also had plans for a tractor pull, concert and stock car race in May and June, but those events were canceled, reportedly because of a lack of sponsorship. Smith said that Collins’ original lease, which expired in May, did not include plans to host a race.

“I don’t know exactly what his plans are, but he had the place leased for 90 days and had not been fortunate to get anything done,” Smith said. “It’s a shame, really, because I’d really like someone to do something up there and be successful.”

As to why Collins was granted an extension on his lease, “I guess he caught me at a weak moment,” Smith said.

Built in 1947, North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina hosted NASCAR races from 1949 until 1996. Smith and former New Hampshire Motor Speedway president Bob Bahre bought the track that year and closed it to move it’s two race dates to New Hampshire and Texas Motor Speedway. The track has sat, virtually mothballed, ever since.

On Tuesday, officials and instructors from the Buck Baker Racing School tested at the speedway to see if it was in good enough shape to host a class there. Collins said the test went well and that the school was “on board.”

A note on the Buck Baker Racing School Web site said, “We are going back to the historic North Wilkesboro Speedway,” and that schools at the track may begin as early as the end of June.

Good. Collins is a con artist, I hope he doesn't get the track.

Ride-alongs at Wilkesboro this Saturday

Race fans in northwest North Carolina will get a chance to take some laps at speed around North Wilkesboro Speedway — in the passenger seat — this weekend.

Two weeks after testing at the facility and kicking the dust off the famed NASCAR track, the Buck Baker Racing School will host hot lap sessions from 8 a.m. until noon, Baker spokesman Thomas Heavey said.

“We’re only doing ride-alongs this week,” Heavey said. “We figured because the difficulty of the track and the tire wear, we wanted to just put our instructors behind the wheel at first.”

Five Buck Baker stock cars will be accompanied by five instructors and five passenger seats. For $20 per lap with a minimum of two laps, race fans can ride shotgun around the 5/8-mile oval.

Heavey said the school has leased the track from Charles Collins for Saturday. Collins currently has a short-term lease from Speedway Motorsports.

Opening in 1947, North Wilkesboro Speedway hosted NASCAR races for 48 years. But it has sat mostly silent since it closed in 1996. Though the infrastructure needs significant work, Buck Baker instructors and officials agreed that the track itself was in fair condition.

“Everything still needs to be painted, but the track is ready to be run on,” Heavey said.
