Annika Sorenstam will compete in the PGA's Colonial Open starting today (thursday 5-14-03). Many male players have taken some surprisingly un-PC stances on this one. Vijay Singh has been the most vocal saying that he hopes she misses the cut (after the first rounds) and that if he is matched up in the same group with her that he will refuse to play. He also says that she is taking a spot from a deserving male player, but that is actually not true. It is an invitational tournament and she is using an invitation that often is just not used anyway or used by an undeserving amateur if it is. The sponsor who thought of this is a pretty bright person, as this has generated a lot of interest in a tournament where there would be not much interest at all if she were not playing. Tiger Woods, among others had already decided not to compete before it was announced that she would play. I really hope she does well, but I'm not sure what it would mean in the future. If she does well, would other women who are not nearly as good as Annika is try playing with the men? I also hope she gets matched up with Singh in the final round to see if he backs up his words, but I really don't think she is good enough to make it that far. She is the most dominating force on the womens tour, but the game is just different. The men play much longer courses due to just being naturally bigger and stronger. All that being said, I hope she kicks butt this weekend. What do you think?

4x, hate to do this to you, but it's next weekend. This week is the Byron Nelson tournament. The Colonial is next week. ;)

It's nothing but a publicity stunt and I think it's b.s. Women created the LPGA so they can play there, the only reason she wants to run in the PGA is to cause trouble and I hope some of the guys DO withdraw.

Yes, it's for publicity. Gets more spectators to the tournament.

Since it's an invitational tournament, the sponsor can invite whomever he wishes. She will play the same length course, so let the game decide.

If Vijay wishes to withdraw, that's his perogative.

Damn, from the way they were talking on the radio, I thought it was this week. Oops. Doesn't really matter though as the same questions will apply next week.

More PC backlash against Vijay for saying what everyone on the tour except Tiger is thinking.

It's this kind of PC bull that is ruining this country.

I personally don't think it is only Tiger that feels that way. Personally, I am interested in watching this tournament for her presence only. I would rather watch Annika do just about anything that to watch Vijay waddle his big ball of blubber around the course another week.

Well i think she should just shut up the critics and play well, make the cut, kick some butt, and let her golf speak for itself. What the hell is Vijay afraid of anyway? If he gets paired with her is he afraid she might beat him.....lol. IMO if she makes the cut, she has accomplished a lot.....i say more power to her, all these whiners......give a rest! ;)
