Actually, there is not much I can do with them. They are an endangered species and it is illegal to do anything with them cept for just keep them.
Captive breeding is illegal in Utah and California, and the war is on so to speak among the opposing factions. I am of the school that thinks the only hope for them is captive herds, while the big money goes towards preserving their natural habitat.
Fortunately for these critters, the herd was established prior to the enactment of the Endangered Species Act which states that any herd established prior to it's enactment is exempt except for selling or giving them away or releasing them and other things like that. Since state laws cannot supercede federal law should Nevada pass a law banning their captive breeding, in theory that would not effect this herd either.
My greatest concern is that of in-breeding but the dominant and first sub-dominant males along with the dominant female are all freeborns. What I am really hoping to do is some "baby trading" thru the local tortoise trust people to help alleviate this but most folks are afraid of doing this as it might spread disease. One of those derned if ya do and derned if ya don't scenarios.
