Another good old brush fire!

Okay, here we sit in a canyon just inside of the Angeles National Forrest and we see smoke and 3 or 4 water dropping helicopters making passes at a fire!! It appears to be about 2 miles up the canyon from us but can't be sure since our visibility is limited by the mountain that forms the north wall of the canyon we live in. You can't get news on the weekend unless it's nearly catastophic so I called the sherriff's office to see what is going on. He didn't have all the details but said it was about 3 or 4 acres in size and the L.A. County fire department and Forrest service had a rather large contingent on site and were optimistic about getting it contained quickly. At least it isn't windy today......plus he said it is moving west which is parallel to us from where I see smoke!! Ruining the Busch race for me!!:(

Sorry to hear that, DE. :(

Are you hosing down your property? Or has that also been banned in California?

You and CP please stay safe! And don't worry about the Busch race. It's probably going to be called for rain soon anyway.

Not doing anything yet.....seems to be maybe two or three small canyons up from us and don't see or hear much activity right now plus smoke looks to have died down a bit so maybe they have it pretty much taken down.........these guys are good!! Not much wind so that is always a good sign.:)

It's not that far to Tehachipi mustang..........come on down and help!!:D

Good thing you don't have any Santa Ana's going on. You guys stay safe!!!

Thanks Walrus........it looks pretty good right now......smoke is barely perceptable and what looks like a fixed wing recon aircraft is circling. The water dropping helicopters have stopped for about 15 mins now.......we can hear them but doesn't appear that they are making passes. The problem is with all the news channels and local stations here in the Los Angeles area we can't get a shred of news on the weekend!! I hate to keep calling the sheriff's office and tie up their lines.:)

I don't miss that ol' neighborhood, no not one bit. I called 911 once back in the early eighties and was on hold for thirty minutes, at that point I hung up and vowed I'd be moving out! It's ashame all those channels and no local news. Good luck to ya'

Good grief, it seems like almost every state has fires. (Except SC)
I hope all is ok and there won't be any more problems.
Maybe it's time to get a scanner for police and fire reports?
Both stay safe PLEASE:) PURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I think they might have it out.........I'll give it another 30 mins or so and if still quiet like it is now I'll call the sherriff's office again.

Cutiepie and I are looking to get out of here too.....just need to find a job somewhere in the southeast and we are gone!!:D

Good plan guys, I was young and impetous, so I did it the other way. Maybe not the sharpest hammer in the shed?

Wow DE, those guys MUST be good, knocking that fire down so fast is great.

They are good..........they get a lot of practice!!:( But a couple things worked in their favor (if, indeed they have gotten a hold of the fire) is that the water dropping helicopter refilling station is about a half mile from us and there is almost no wind. But living here you get plenty of opportunity to see just how good they are. It's amazing how accurate the drops are.:)

You know where Tehachapi is? Wow. I wish I could go up there and help. I was coming home from college on Thursday and there was a brush fire on the side of the road. I wish I was helping out now but it will be a few years. Firefighting is such a hard job to get in now.

Yeah Mustang I know where is Tehachapi is......just over the "Grapevine" from us. And I really admire those forrest service fire fighters.......such a grueling and, sometimes, thankless job!! Good luck and I, personally, want to thank you for even considering just such a job.

Thank you buddy!!:D

Thanks, I'll try my best and good luck to you. I hope that fire doesn't come any closer.

Looking good right now.......called the sheriff's office again and they wouldn't say for sure that it's contained but he said that the fire fighters are VERY optimistic (I capitolized very because he emphasized it). I haven't seen any helicopter water drops for over an hour and the recon plane has left the area.......haven't heard the helicopters for about a half hour either. I see no sign of smoke. I'm relaxing again........thanks for you thoughts.:)

Okay guys.......it's been quiet for over 2 1/2 hrs now and no smoke in sight........you guys can quit worrying about Cutie and me!!:)

Thanks so much for your good thoughts.:D

First thing tomorrow, you need to get a police/fire scanner.

Glad all is OK, purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

We have a scanner:) Not only do the police and others sort of make it hard to get the frequencies but this canyon is pretty much blocked from any radio signals......tv, radio, cell phone, even direct tv unless you can put your receiver up on a ridge. Mustang, I'm sure can relate to that and probably Walrus too.....anyone who has lived or spent time out here know just how steep and rugged these mountains are. Pretty impressive if you see it for the first time......but, it's still just an irrigated desert!!:D

I have never had to drink so much water in my life. Before I moved to California, I spent 10 years in Washington state where everyday it rained and then spent 2 years in Marietta Georgia where all you had to do was breathe for your water supply. Everything here is dead. No wonder there are so many fires.

Like I said mustang......it's just an irrigated desert. Especially where you live......San Jauquin Valley!!! Not sure I spelled that right!!:)
