DALLAS -
The 14-year-old girl from the Netherlands who threatened American Airlines in a tweet has inspired copycats.
The Washington Post reports dozens of likely teenage pranksters have begun sending American and other airlines "joke" tweets about bombs on planes.
For example, @SkyyLicious wrote, "@AmericanAir I have a bomb under the next plane to take off" and @versaceftziam wrote, "@AmericanAir hello my name is Ibrahim I think you guys are the BOMB!!!!!!"
@KalenRiley10 directed his tweet to Southwest Airlines. "@SouthwestAir I bake really good pies and my friends call me ″the bomb" am I still allowed to fly?" he wrote.
On Sunday American Airlines received a tweet that said it came from an al-Qaida member in Afghanistan named Ibrahim and threatened to "do something really big on June 1." But the account's handle came with the nickname "Sarah" and a profile image of a young woman.
Apologetic tweets were posted to the account after the airline replied it was taking the threat seriously and calling in law enforcement.
Police spokesman Roland Ekkers said the girl, who has not been identified for privacy reasons, turned herself in to Rotterdam police with a parent Monday and was interrogated.
The airlines have not yet commented on the copycats, most of whom have already been suspended on Twitter.
