RICHMOND, Va. -- Another week, another beef against Tony Stewart.

Stewart, who took a tongue lashing from Rusty Wallace in the media two weeks ago after the two got together at California Speedway, received yet another verbal barrage Saturday night following an incident with Jeff Gordon at Richmond International Raceway.

Stewart was running fourth on the final restart behind Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Gordon, and was the first car on new tires with 46 laps remaining.

Obviously the faster of the two machines, Stewart sped down into the Turn 3 to make the pass and hit Gordon, nearly wrecking the DuPont Chevrolet.

"I'm sure Jeff thinks I tried to take him out," Stewart said after the race.

Yep.

"We're seeing it every weekend, and you'd think a guy getting abuse by the media and the drivers would start thinking a little bit more," Gordon said. "He had a much faster car, fresher tires, got inside of me, and the position was his and he just drove straight into me and put me in the wall about put himself in the wall."

Stewart, who lashed out at FOX analyst Darrell Waltrip during a pre-race interview, explained that he wasn't the only driver to rub fenders Saturday.

"We got a little loose and I got into Jeff, and I'm sure Darrell and those guys up there (in the booth) are lobbying for me to get suspended for life from NASCAR," Stewart said. "But that's the only incident we had all night.

"There were a lot of guys with body rubs. If contact gets you a suspension for a race or two, we'll only have 18 cars next week. I had a top-three night until I ran into the 24, and I know he's mad at me.

"I just got down into Turn 3 and got loose. We made a change and that's probably what made it loosed - not to mention all the oil dry down there."

Earlier in the race, Stewart used cautious aggression while chasing Michael Waltrip, Darrell's brother, for the lead. Some speculated it was due to his recent rash of incidents.

"Well, you've got to keep in mind his brother up in the booth and he's been carrying a hatchet on me the last couple of weeks so we don't dare touch his little brother out there for fear he's going to crush me with the media," Stewart said.

"I think it's a joke anymore. It just happens that for a couple weeks in a row we got into it with people. Heaven forbid we accidentally have accidents. If you can't touch anybody and you've got to worry about it every race, I might as well quit this sport and go back to running Sprint cars, where there's none of this stuff.

"At least you're allowed to race there. You don't have to worry about people hacking you in the media every time you touch somebody."

I actually see Tony's side to an extent about things getting out of control. But at the same time, Tony has caused the largest part of what is going on here.

Maybe that wouldn't be such a bad idea, Stewart quitting. I think he's lost alot of respect from both fans and drivers.

1. I really wish Jeff hadn't referred to any race but this one. Not good to wail about
other races. Tacky.

2. Tony spouting off about Darrel was a tad petulant, but I know he had to have been
peeved about the outcome of the race and wanted to smack somebody. Entirely
understandable.

3. The comment about returning to sprint cars was pure whine. Regretable.

Excellent post Flame.

Hello people... this is racing. Can't people remember what a mennace DW used to be like on the track.. Don't throw mud unless you are prepared to get it back. This is racing. Tony is a racer. He races hard in everything. Eventually he will get his. It seems that people forget that sometimes racing is about banging into each other. Heck if you don't like that... go take up needle point.

I just received a newsletter that had this article in it:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Gordon unhappy with Stewart: #20-Tony Stewart found himself defending
his on-track actions again Saturday night. This time, his target -
#24-Jeff Gordon - is willing to forgive and forget, at least for now.
With 40 laps remaining in Saturday night's Chevy American Revolution 400
at Richmond International Raceway, Stewart and Gordon were racing for
position when Stewart nudged Gordon's #24 Chevrolet up and out of the
main racing groove. Gordon wobbled and lost a position. He was running
in the top five and eventually finished sixth. Stewart finished fourth.
After the race, Stewart made an unexpected visit to Gordon's hauler and
spoke privately with Gordon for several minutes. "From where I was at,
it seemed like he just body-slammed me for no reason but he came up to
me in the trailer and said he was sorry he got loose," Gordon said. "I
questioned it. He was like, "Hey, I'm telling you the truth, I got
loose.' I'll have to look. They say he got loose the time before that.
Maybe he did. If he did, then I'll accept his apology. If he didn't,
then he certainly needs to get his act together." Asked immediately
after the race about the incident, Stewart said he knew Gordon was "mad
at him." "I just got down into (Turn) 3 and I got loose and we made a
change (on the last pit stop) and that's probably what made it loose,"
Stewart said.

I forgot to add that I think it was very good of Tony to go talk to Jeff.

I'm glad he did too.
From my seat, , it looked like Tony drove into the corner as he had before the pitstop. The adjustments made weren't exactly right and he was looser than he thought he'd be. Watching the rest of the race, it was pretty clear Tony's car wasn't the same as before the pit stop.
To be honest, I don't understand this. Several times Tony has had the car to beat and the final pitstop takes him out of conntention by a bad adjustment.

Ugh, and Jeff never has pushed anyone out of the way at a short track?

i missed what happand between him and jeff. so i cant take a side.

Jeeze guys, can't anyone race hard anymore? Every successful driver in the Cup series (and that includes every Champion, past and present) has "moved" someone out of the way and/or drove too hard into a turn and slipped. You just don't win races and Championships by being Mr. Clean all the time!!! Jeff, a real serious and talented driver, was whining (yeah, they do that too :) ) because a late race incident that he feels cost him a position or a win.......I'm not faulting him for his whine (I'd whine too). But, I do fault some reporters for "getting the scoop" before hearing and thinking about all sides......to say that any driver (Tony particularly) is loosing the respect of the other drivers in the series is pretty much speculation. It only adds fuel to the Tony haters and puts more pressure on Tony to either win or die trying in an effort to stiffle all the criticism about him. I saw the incident.......and it sure did not look like a "body slam" as Jeff discribed it. Way too much side taking by the press lately. And that unfairly puts someone on the defensive.

I, for one, am getting really tired of ALL the finger pointing. The media is more responsible for the negativity than Tony, just by harping on each and every "incident".
