Geez, I hope this economy turns around...:(

Sirius Speedway has learned that Chevron-Texaco will not return as sponsor of #42-Juan Pablo Montoya's Dodge next season. The Texaco-Havoline brand is in the final year of its sponsorship contract with Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, and a media representative for Ganassi Racing confirmed the move this afternoon. Texaco-Havoline will not move to another team in 2009, electing instead to end their longstanding involvement in NASCAR. That decision leaves Ganassi Racing in need of at least two new sponsors in 2009, and possibly three. Team owner Chip Ganassi recently parked the #40 Dodge driven by Dario Franchitti due to lack of sponsorship, and there are longstanding rumors that Target may not return to the #41 Dodge currently driven by Reed Sorenson. if this keeps up we will be back to having field fillers in every race again :(
except the fillers will be underfunded legit teams.

ok nascar. It's about time to throw away the top 35 rule (or maybe make it top 20), and cut down the field sizes if needed.

I'm sure someone will sponsor JPM next year. maybe wrigleys will do it. I'm surprised Sorenson hasn't done better in sprint cup series. But I think he'll get a sponsor too. I think the networks need to mention all of the cars during the broadcasts to give everyone some air time.

I dont quite understand this one......Texaco is making a ton of profits right now...it doesnt really make sense for them to leave the sport.

Pretty soon The Chase will be all season long because there will be only 10 teams left.

If they don't think they're getting their money's worth it does. Afterall their loyalty has to be to their shareholders and not to Nascar or its teams or fans. I've always wondered how companies could justify spending the millions they do to sponsor a car. Especially if its on a car that is seldom seen in the race much less win.

That does suck. They have been in it for a long time, thats too bad. I blame the networks.

Well said as usual BP. Oil companies are making billions at the pumps, but that doesn't mean that they should spend any of that profit on NASCAR.

As to your wondering, corporations take a lot of pride in being a sponsor of a NASCAR team. For automotive related companies like NAPA, AutoZone, Valvoline, Texaco, etc. it is a chance to imply how their product performs at the highest levels of racing. Of course, just because it says NAPA or Advance Auto Parts or the side sure doesn't mean that those cars have any of that companies products in them. Quaker Sludge is a sponsor of the #24 among others, but I seriously doubt they are running the same stuff in those cars that you or I can buy at Walmart.

Sponsorship money is being examined just as all expenses should be by a company. I personally think that there is an intrinsic value in automotive companies like Texaco being involved in NASCAR sponsorship, that may go beyond just what income is actually generated from the advertisements. NASCAR fans are some of the most loyal fans out there, and are the kind of people who may be swayed heavily by who sponsors what. I still don't like Home Depot, and I can't say how much of that is because of Tony Stewart. I had heard of the Home Depot #20 before I ever saw a Home Depot store. Conversely, I've always bought STP products, probably because Richard Petty was my favorite driver ever.

It is a tough economy out there right now, with no short term hope of recovery. Every company is being careful about what they do right now. Unfortunately, I can see a whole lot more sponsors jumping like rats off of a sinking ship in the near future.

So you're saying when the #59 Kingsford Charcoal Hauler caught fire that might have been a good thing for the sponsor...Look see how good our stuff burns, much better than the other guys... :)

That would be the height of irony right there :D

height of irony..... I remember a few years ago, not sure of driver,( maybe Scott Goodyear or Sharpe???) at Indy having Ruffles all over his car, and having to pit for a clogged air inlet...... the culprit, you guessed it, a Ruffles chip bag.....lol.

as for Texaco leavin, end of an era..... hate to see them go. will be strange not to see the star.
But the problem, at least as I see it, is all the multi-car teams...... seems if you aren't a part of Gibbs, Roush, Hendrick, there isn't alot of interest. Either from the collectables, news and media, or broadcasters. As far as the millions it costs for a team, there is a certain bit of prestige, but even more importantly is the TV time, brand recognition, and presence at a track. With NASCAR gettin more and more invloved into who can sponsor....... where they can display at the track....... and the overall lack of regard to the sponsors themselves (practically have to beg for video and pics of THEIR cars to use in adds at track, then have to credit NASCAR......) it's just kinda sad. Hope the economy as well as the direction of NASCAR changes, or I'm afraid this won't be the last to go.........

I remember when Folgers coffee pulled their sponsorship off the 6 car driven by Mark Martin way back when, their sales dropped. Bud supposedly paid upwards of 18 million per year to be on Jr's car. Some media outfit tracks tv time and again, supposedly, all the time when the #8 with Bud was shown on tv it was worth 70-80 million if Bud had to pay for the time.
Costs are way out of hand. Ask anyone at your local track. The higher you go the more it costs too.

That’s the #1 problem. Outside those three teams there is really no contender for the title. I know I would not spend the money on a car that never gets air time and has almost no chance of winning the title. The economy is part of the problem for sure but I feel the new car has played a part in the problem as well. It was only a few years ago that RCR, Yates, DEI, Penske and Evernham could have been mentioned with the other three teams.

The new car, to me, just shows who has the money to spend and who doesn't. The car was supposed to help cut on costs but I don't think it has helped in that way at all, if anything it has made it harder for the smaller teams to compete with Hendrick, Roush and Gibbs.

I agree sledge..... I think what also hurts the smaller teams is all the NASCAR mandated gears, shocks, etc...... I understand savin money on R and D..... but just seems that ya used to be able to play with the car more...... if you were out horsed, gear the car and beat 'em on fuel...... or try a trick setup..... was just more tinkerin with what ya had.....now its more like a 3 owner IROC race.....

Just wait, it'll probably be these before too much longer....

I hope it does not come to that but I would not be shocked. The way I see it is if nascar sets the hp, weight and body shape, very strictly I might add, then the teams should be able to do whatever they want beyond that. Then it might be more competitive. Might being the key word.

I love seeing Kyle up front and doing so well but I get tired of the same 4 or 5 guys winning most of the races every year. Nascar needs a good under dog or Cinderella story.

man ganassi's nascar program is in shambles i think they might find sponsorship for the #42 but i dont see a 2nd team especially now sorenson is going GEM. so many driver and sponsor changes next year its gonna take me half the year just to remember whos driving what.

For me personally, the Texaco Star was and will continue to be Davey Allison's sponsor. I could never get used to it with anyone else and when they went to the 42 team, it made it worse. Sad to see them go, but they went when we lost Davey.
