Wow is Tony hot right now or what. Love seeing him run so good. I just hope he can keep it up and claim the championship.
Heard one of the reporters say that Zippy said they have changed something with the way they are testing and they think that is helping them be so stronge. Whatever it is I'm liking it! :beerbang:

Yippy, Zippy.Congrats to all the Tony fans.

But, that was the last "off the wall" track for a while, right? Two Road courses, a plate race and a reworked IRL track thats been around a million years'? I have a feeling Michigan and Bristol will seperate the smoke from the fire.

Go Tony!

I think you're right 97, Tony will probably dominate there too, and he's really good at Richmond so the "Smoke" will probably be way ahead of the fire.

Tony done good today. Robby and Boris also ran a good race. Rusty, once again, ran a smart race and he is firmly entrenched in 4th in the points. All-in-all it was a very good race. I would give it a 7 or 8 on the scale. J. Gordon would have made the race even more interesting if he had not had a tire cut from the debri and then the caution penalty.

All I can say is Tony is on a roll and I don't think there is a track in his way right now. He will do what EVER it takes to see it through to the end.

As posted by 97forever: I have a feeling Michigan and Bristol will seperate the smoke from the fire.

 Just a little bit of sour grapes for your boys. :p

Nope. After all, it isnt MY boys who drive rival hardware company cars after all! When it comes to drivers of those off-brand cars, Stewart is all ya'll have. ;) :D

(Besides, he has been my only Chevy 'Big Dawg' all year!)

why do all of you call tony smoke

Tony got the nickname Smoke when he first started racing. He used to blow a lot of motors becuase of the way he drove, creating a lot of Smoke.

Whatever it is that Tony and the team is doing, it is WORKING !

Congratulations 20 team --- awesome performance.

I'm going to Richmond. Ought to be interesting. :D

I know that this is a Tony thread but I would also like to point out that J. Gordon is now only 67 points away from the top 10. :)

You have to wonder if maybe Bill Elliott told him his secret that lead him to win all of those races years ago. That is until NASCAR found out about the secret...

Re: Tony's nickname

I was under the impression that shortly after Tony joined JGR's Cup operation, he was still racing midgets and sprint cars whenever he had an open weekend or a big openwheel show midweek.

Mr. Gibbs did not take very kindly to his highly paid driver endangering himself with that type of activity and requested Mr. Stewart not indulge in it any longer.

Shortly after that exchange between team owner and driver, there was a pretty large midget show and some driver in an orange Home Depot fire suit showed up and signed in as "Smoke Johnson".

I don't remember if he won the A main that night or not, but the nickname seems to have stuck to Tony like stink to a startled skunk.

I believe that Tony was the first person to win the National Championship in all three of the top USAC divisions in the same season; he also has an IRL Championship and a NASCAR Cup title to his credit and it would appear he'd like to add another this year as well.

Pretty impressive racer!

You are right boB, Tony did enter a midget race as "Smoke Johnson" but he had already earned the nickname "Smoke" prior to ever racing in Nascar. In 1995 Tony was the first, and still the only driver to win the Triple Crown, championships in Silver Crown, sprint cars and midgets.

Ah, JJ Yeley won the triple crown also. Tony was mentoring him and I believe JJ drove TS cars also.

When did JJ win the triple crown? Can't believe I missed that.

In 2003, J.J. set a new USAC record of 24 wins in a single season and broke A.J. Foyt's USAC record of 19 wins, set in 1961. He is the second driver in history to win the "Triple Crown", by winning all three USAC open wheel divisions in one season.

Geez I must have had a blonde moment. I guess I did know that but it never really sank in. Thanks for the correction gang.
