Santa's little elf's are building my new PC now and I should have it shortly. It's a Dell Dimension 8250 Series which will include a 4X DVD Burner with video editing equipment.

I was wondering if anyone here burned, authored, or made backups DVD's? If so, what do you use? What software? What media? Any suggestions?

I just have a CD burner.:( One day, I'm going to build me another computer and it will have both CD and DVD burners! Plus a huge hard drive, at least a gig of memory (but will have to get away from Win ME for that!), firewire, USB2, and anything else I can think of (and, of course, afford:( ). Gonna keep my 19" monitor though..........waiting for those flat panels to come down to something reasonable.:)

I've heard DVD burners are pretty much like CD burners........in other words, you have to make sure you get the right media or they don't work.:) Your manual will tell you and I'm sure you will get software bundled with your machine from Dell.

DE, I heard last Saturday on the computer program on the radio that the DVD media (discs) are much more expensive than audio CDs. Something in the order of $3-5.00 per discs, but I've seen them on Price Watch for as little as 88 cents each. I've been debating whether or not to get a DVD burner with my new computer after the first of the year. :satisfied

Yeah, I know the DVD disks are expensive..........but I remember when CD's where outragiously priced too!:) Heck I remember when floppies where out of sight...........the 5 1/4" floppies with 750k storage!:D They'll come down in price.:)

Oh jeez, 5 1/4 inch floppies! Now you are dating yourself. How many AOL 3 1/2 inch floppies did you reformat and reuse? :) That was a really good racket til they switched to CDs. Yeah, just like everything else, those CDs will drop in price as will the burners.

Actually, I upgraded from a CD-RW to the DVD +RW for $160 bucks. Couldn't resist.

I heard that there is a program called DVDxCopy which makes identical copies of your DVD's. It's about $100 but there is freeware out there that can do the same if you like to be adventurous.

As for authoring, I know Unlead.com has a decent entry level program. I was just wondering if any pros were on these forums to help shed some light on the subject.
