my hope is that this thread doesn't go off the tracks. I consider myself a fan of the sport. I do have drivers I like more than others. But for me the sport is about people and personalities of course outside the actual racing itself. With the drivers that I don't like or historically haven't liked, often times I find myself feeling sorry for them and I actually like seeing them do well and revive their careers. 2 drivers come to mind for me. The first is jamie mcmurray. to me the guy has always been kinda a pretty boy. he had some ruff years at roush. The he moved back to chip, and won 3 races that year. While I am still not a big fan of his I actually liked seeing him revive what had been a sinking career. The other is kurt busch I actually felt sorry for the guy and rooted for him when he was in finches car and later in the furniture row car. That is why I consider myself a fan of the sport.

Then comes hamlin. as we got down to the final 4 yesterday I really didn't care who won it I just didn't want to see hamlin win it. The thing is I don't really know why I dislike the guy so much. does anyone else feel this way?? I saw a graphic once I don't remember where. it showed a hamlin win was the least popular with TV audiences. Please keep this respectful. If you are a hamlin fan thats ok, I don't dislike you too. I am just trying to figure out whats so unpopular about this guy. I have some things that have really turned off but I don't want to poison the responses

You echoed my thoughts. I can't think of anything to say that wouldn't offend someone that is a fan of Hamlin so I'll just say that I was rooting for anyone other than him as well.

I have always thought it was kinda childish to rate a driver on all the hollywoodish B.S., but it is hard not to these days with all the press dogging their every move, and everybody has a camera. I try to rate it on the way a driver races. Hamlin this year changed his racing style as did Newman and they had good success doing so. Kurt Busch was a disappointment until Stewart Hass switched crew chiefs, and Kurt showed some speed. I think Jamie McMurray was loafing a bit when Juan Pablo was around, he won some big paying races and coasted after that. When young Larson showed up, his job was threatened when Ganassi started rolling heads and improving the teams. Jamie had to start running harder and he has.

Anybody who knows me knows that I severely dislike Hamlin. That being said, I know of him only through how he is portrayed on TV and how he conducts himself on social media. I'm sure he's a nice guy, would be cool to hang out with if I actually knew him, etc. etc., but he seems like a huge douchebag. He did the ****ing Dougie during driver intros once. His aura just oozes cheesiness and doucheyness. I did feel bad for him after he busted up his back, though. Seeing him lose the championship in 2010 was just as good as seeing Jimmie win it.

Anybody who posts pictures like this to Twitter doesn't deserved to be liked by anybody ;)

the purpose of this thread wasn't to pee on and offend hamlin fans but simply get to the root of perhaps why he is so unliked. that picture above sure doesn't help his image.

Even though I've been sporting the #11 avatar all week, I'm not really that big of a Denny fan. I was mainly rooting for him because I wanted to see Toyota win their first Sprint Cup. Having said that, I think the guy that won the Cup yesterday is as big a bag of douche as Denny is, if not a little bigger. I was really hoping Newman would get up a head of steam and pass him there at the end.

I can see the side of Hamlin that may rub people the wrong way. I used to dislike him for those reasons but now I am more neutral.... I did think it was awfully lame when he won the Bud Shootout this yr. and said "Any questions?" over the radio.

I think as an athlete you have to be confident but not too ****y. Theres a fine line between confidence, ****yness & douchbaginess. If youre gonna be ****y you gotta back it up with your performance. Hamlin rarely backs it up.

2 seasons ago he said "I normally never see him" talking about Logano & then Logano burned him this season. Then Hamlin's attitude during speedweeks wasnt backed up during the season - unlike Harvick's. Hamlin crosses the ****y-douchebag line every so often but he has enormous talent.

I dont know any Hamlin fans but I know plenty of Harvick & Kyle Busch fans. My roomate is a fan of both. Go figure.

"all we do is win" and "any questions" are two statements that stick in my mind for some reason. I dont care for any of Kyles team mates, I just dont

Harvick had other plans :p:D

I was rooting for Hamlin as I didn't care to see the 3 other idiots win it.

I was rooting for Harvick for the same reason. Besides I like Harvick.

I think everyone is way too sensitive to everything that is on this planet.

I neither like or dislike Hamlin.

I don't give a sh*t how any driver is off the track. All I care about is how they race.

Reasons to like Hamlin:
He is a very good driver. On some of the flat tracks like New Hampshire he can hook up and make it a race for second place. When he finds the right set up he can dominate like few others. He definitely has a driving skill set that could win multiple titles.

The insane crusade by Bayne wins or whatever he call himself led me to sympathize with Denny and Jordan some. Jordan really is cute as well.

Sad to see his Fontana injury last year.

Reasons not to like him: Primarily being Denny Hamlin is sufficient and justified reasons alone not to like him . The way he utterly dismissed Lagano or better said tried to dismiss Joey as some fly weight back marker early last year exposed a narcissistic conceitedness. I couldn't help but to root for Joey between the two, during those times. I wonder if Joey had been bullied at JGR, and I was glad to see Joey push back.
Then at other times Denny seems overly sensitive like someone that couldn't endure a good stare down.

Note: I am a Harvick fan and old Happy could write a book on most of Dennys flaws. He could probably teach him some new techniques on being a creepy jerk. Joey will have to draw a line against him as well.

Long story short most everyone is full of crap and flawed. My conflicted opinion is a good example. Why expect more from human drivers.

Well said as usual, Greg.

As for the original question, why do people dislike Hamlin? He comes across as an incredibly arrogant SOB most of the time, plain and simple.

I've told my Hamlin story on here before, but he was my arch nemesis for the longest time. Then he hurt his back dinkin' around with Joey. I still didn't like him at that point in time, but I felt bad for him, because, y'know, I am a human being and all. Then he returned at Darlington without having back surgery, ran up towards the front all night long, and finished second. That was a really gutsy run, and I was impressed. I wanted to see him make a comeback and run well again even though I couldn't stand him. He fell off as the year progressed, but then he bounced back and won at Homestead, and I was booing him but laughing at the same time. I was happy for him, and I had finally learned not to take him so seriously.

Hamandcheese's arrogance has ascended to such ridiculously high levels that now I can't help but like that ****y mofo. I root for him like I root for a heel in pro wrestling. His antics and silly statements no longer upset me these days - they crack me up. That's my man.

LOL. Harvicks douche baggyness works that way for me too.

Your old shirtless Hamlin avatar made me want to gouge my eyes out :windows::D

hamlin is a "broadway joe " wannabe.........w/o joe's charm.
plus.....namath won his superbowl !

but.....somebody likes him.....else fedex would be gone . ....?

Lets face it, most of the great athletes at any sport could be pricks! Type A personalities tend to rub the other types the wrong way!
see I wouldn't say that. I think the nascar community is different. for one thing most nascar drivers aren't idiot loosers like most of other sports. however it does take fans liking a driver. its more about that just about winning races. We have seen that with drivers like clint bowyer and kenseth. They had to switch teams because they didn't have sponsorship. I remember another time when hamlin got into with brad k when he was running for junior in the NW series. He mouthed off how brad k had no cup experience and didn't understand how to properly race someone. I wonder if joey ever thinks, "do you see me now"

I like him because he is in a TRD powered Toyota Camry. I don't have to think too much. Shouldn't you guys be watching Oprah reruns or something? The other non-Oprah reason I like him is that in the COT days he could work the brake at Martinsville like nobody else. Just magic to watch.

Tom Cruise, I believe. Pretty sure that if Bill Gates and Oprah had a baby, it would be him. I know about you and Denny. Just remember that my relationship with him is superficial. Leaves the Toyota fold, and he is dead to me. :D

I don't think drving a Camry is exciting either, it's dead to me as well.;)

Nah, I think I'll stick to watching NASCAR instead.

Everyone watches it and likes or dislikes certain drivers for their own personal reasons, none of which are any more or less valid than anyone else's IMO.

very true, I would add New Hampshire, and to a lesser degree Richmond and even Pocono to that list.
He has something figured out about flat tracks.

With all of the intangibles involved in racing it is hard to measure drivers head to head. But Dennys finesse at those tracks says a lot about his talent. I do believe the abilities or discipline at those tracks have to be attributed to the driver.

A friend of a friend of friends cousins DaddyUncle told me:

Oprahs production team tried to book him, in a set that would feature Dr Phil and Denny entitled "Let's make Denny Happy".

But Dr Phil declined: He said that it was impossible and that he didn't have the time to listen to all that crap. He also noted that he could handle folks like a young Cole Sear and the neurotic Bob Wily, but Denny Hamlin time was just way way to ambitious.

Do you think that the reduced weight of the Gen 6 + brake technology made everybody else better which reduced his advantage or do you think that there is something inherent to the Gen 6 that made him worse? I am of the former thinking rather than the later? Your thoughts....

Agreed.
