I know you can read or research about anywhere online. I've been reading about ND for a month now, but was curious if anyone here is actually familiar with that state?

I'm about to go mobile, and ND seems about as good a place as any, lol

Any input will be appreciated.

Spent two years at Grand Forks AFB just outside Grand Forks. Three words come to mind, cold as hell. Actually the temperature differences between summer and winter are great. The first day I arrived at GFAFB the temp was 104 degrees on the 4th of June. I have skiied down a hill when the temp was -28 with a chill factor of close to -100. You get used to the clime there and dress for the temps. Snow will be around from late October until early April, but since it is so dry, driving on the snow is not much of a problem as long as you don't put your foot into the floor like one of my old roommates who was from Alabama said. He told me, in his exact words (I'll never forget them) "To get around in this ****, you gotta keep your foot in the gas". He had a Firebird and was always stuck! Grand Forks is on the eastern side of the state but I also worked on the western side during the summer a couple of years as well and other than saying it was hot, there wasn't much difference. I don't think that there are more than a million people in the entire state, so it's pretty sparse. Don't ever get caught on the highway in the winter when the winds are strong. The sun might be shinning and not a cloud in the sky, but it will be like a blizzard because of the blowing snow (remember, it's very dry so the snow doesn't melt). You also don't want to park your car on the streets during a blizzard. I've seen more than one car completely chewed up by a snow blower on the front of big trucks. As you can see, my two years brings back mostly cold weather memories, but that's just me. Had some great times there both at GFAFB and on the western part. Don't forget to bring along some long underwear!

Thanks Buck...I was just chatting with an old friend from Manitoba who said almost the exact same line :" Colder than hell".

I will take that into account. I considered Grand forks (where manitoba shops!) but think Bismarck might suit me better.

Grand Forks is on the border of Minnesota so you can get what we called the Minnidak experience.

The only thing I know about North Dakota is that there aren't many people there and it gets really cold. I had an old friend who talked to me one time about how great it would be to live there because there are no black people up there. He grew up as white bread as you can around here. He lived in a pretty affluent community and he was a big strong jock so it's not like he had ever been bullied or anything. I'm not sure where that kind of hate came from. But, I digress. He ended up meeting a smoking hot woman in college who's family was from South Dakota. They got married and lived here for a few years before they ended up moving up there where her family lives.

Pretty much nothing there, only thing eventful that happened to me was coming over the border from Saskatchewan, the US North Dakota border guards were idiots. I had a rental car with New York plates, i'm from Ohio. The local Hertz rental place recieved a one way rental from New York, so thats what i got. The border guards could not understand how someone from Ohio had a car with New York plates, they just couldnt comprehend it. While they throughly searched the car they broke my Sprint 4G overdrive modem. So far thats my 2nd most hated border crossing... Only other thing i recall from ND was the Schatz truck stop, owned by either his family or Donny Schatz(World of Outlaws champion) himself? They had some of his racing merchandise on display there.

Williston, ND. is currently in an oil boom There is a lot of work to be had there, but no housing/apts./rooms available - some folks are living in RV's and tents in the Walmart parking lot because of the current housing shortage.

I saw that on the news not too long ago, looks like if you know the Oil Biz there is a lot of work to be had there.
