I think the cars would have been impounded after timing...did they get impounded anyway even though there wasn't time trials?

They practiced on Friday. That was about it. I didn't know this was an impound race. I don't see how they could do much work on them without any feedback since there was no practice Saturday.
This is not an impound race for Cup. Except for changing engine/tranmission, the crew can work on the car.

ask it another way.. If it WERE an impound race and the zact weather had happened would the cars be impounded? And at what point would all work have to stop in such a case?

At a impound race all cars are impounded immediately as they come off the track following their qualifing run. Other than checking air pressure before the start no other changes.
Even if it is a impound they can still make major changes such as engine, trans etc but they lose their quailifing position and start in the rear. IIRC.
