Has this kind of thing happened before, if so how many times and did it get this kind of atention?

I remember a fight taking place in the pits as Darrel Waltrip came through the garage area with someone? Earnhardt sr., Rusty? Not sure who it was but a real maylay with the crews....anybody remeber this one?

I think that was Rusty's crew after D.W. spun him in the Winston.

The crew maylay may have been in the '87 Winston. Bill Elliott, Geoff Bodine, and Dale Earnhardt had been getting into on track all race - whihc included the "pass in the grass which wasn't really a pass" and Bodine bumping one of them during a caution. It might have spilled over to after the race.

Yes, it was Rusty who spun D.W. in '89.

It was Donnie who wrecked with Cale, and then Bobby drove up after the race and got into it. And no, they were just fined and given 6 months probation by NASCAR. Remember, that was just the first NASCAR race ever telvised live, so the sport was nowhere near as big then as it is now.

I remember back in 1994 or '95, something like this happened - oddly enough, it was at Michigan. On pit road after the race, Michael Waltrip (with Bahari) parked behind Lake Speed (with Melling Racing) while they were stopped waiting for traffic to clear. He walked up to Speed's car, dropped the window net, and punched him twice through the window. Unlike Busch, Speed had a helmet on, and wasn't injured. Waltrip was fined $10 grand by NASCAR.

Then there was the fight last year between Ricky Rudd and one of his engine builders at Richmond. During what seemed like a cordial discussion, the builder sucker-punched Rudd (who had a shiner for weeks afterward), and then, after they had been separated, Rudd threw a water bottle at him in retaliation. Both were fined by NASCAR, and the engine builder resigned from RYR.

Of course, we cant forget that Cale Yarborough was beaten senseless in front of a nationwide audience.

Cale beaten senseless ???? I don't think so.

This type of reaction under the pressures these drivers are under has been going on for years. There are probably 100 fights fans never heard about. The reason ? It was common place and there were some drivers you just plain didn't mess with. Cale Yarborough was one of them.

But there were times a tire iron (most of you might not know what a tire iron is) wrapped in a newspaper was the official greeting for an offending driver on his return to the pit area.

Now NASCAR is main stream, this type of retaliation is discouraged and the bumper sticker than declared "my driver can beat up your driver" has been removed from the rear bumpers. JJ :D

I remember seeing Dale Jr fighting to get out of a paper bag. He finally gave up and waited for his daddy to open it up for him.

I thought that Mikey actually cut in front of him to stop him?

I think you are correct 17 Fan. They showed a piece of that tape on one of the shows ( that Michael is and was on, kept his head down reading something while it was run) Michael was already out of his car but by the way it was blocking Lake's car and the cars were touching that almost certainly was how it happened.

Actually the crews fight more then the drivers do. It's intense a lot of the time, but the cammrodery is also very strong amoung different crew members of differing teams. Most of these people have long histories with one another.

Cale Yarborough was one of those drivers that was known you didn't want to mess with, and I was known as the pit crew man not to mess with. That's when I was 16 and pitting for my Dad.

Anyway, Spencer may have not been exactly in the right when he beat on that woman, Busch, but the little woman had it comin.

One of my favorite sporting brawls is when Robin Ventura charged Nolan Ryan after Nolan beaned him with a fast ball, and Nolan put Robin in a headlock, and beat the snot out of him.

Spencers deal ranks almost right up there.
