At least one tornado spun off from the remnants of tropical storm Cindy and hit Atlanta Motor Speedway on Wednesday night, causing damage estimated in the $25 to $40 million range.

According to a story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, two of the track’s scoring pylons were toppled, the Weaver grandstand was torn in pieces and the building at start/finish line — housing several condominiums and the speedway’s administrative offices — suffered severe damage.

heres a big one of the tower, i had to get the right URL, the one the site takes you to is of the tore usa flag.

Damn. Time for a renovation. They have a lot of work ahead of them before the October race weekend.

They could sell some of that stuff on e-bay or something to raise money for new stuff, I sure a lot of ppl would like to have parts of the stands and such.

Like N2 said, lots and lots of work to be done before the October race. :(

Is that 25 to 40 accurate?? That seems like an awful large amount

From the pictures it looks to be that much. Alot of that stuff will need to be torn down and completly replaced.

Some things can be fixed quickly. The Weaver stands and the Suites probably won't be ready until sometime next year. So any speculation on what they do. You know they have already sold tickets that there won't be a seat for now.

What was I thinking. All they have to do is clear the debris. Only 50 percent of the seating capacity will be filled come race weekend anyway. I am sure they can find 50 percent of the seats suitable for using.

All I can say is WOW and thanks Maj and Lappy for the link and the pics.

You'll find more pics from the AJC here. http://lpe.ajc.com/gallery/view/metro/0705/storm/14

The pic maj posted is the Weaver Grandstand on the backstretch.
Walls were blown out of the suites on the front stretch and in some of the condos in turn 4.

I have a good friend that lives within 15 minutes of the track. He can't even get out of his driveway because of the downed trees. The power line to his house is laying in the hot tub on his deck.

I'm glad your friend is OK, TRL. That was a nasty one here as well.

Tara Field, the airport right next ti the track, where the drivers, owners, and more land for testing and race weeks was also badly damaged.

The pictures on the local news show a lot more detai and there are still flood watches in effect.

Dennis is next! I have a feeling this is going to be a rough season weatherwise for a good number of tracks.
