Atwood out? the Augusta Chronicle is reporting - Sources close to Casey Atwood's team [#7 Sirius Satellite Dodge] said the driver probably will be [released] at the end of the season. Atwood already has struck a deal to drive a limited schedule on the BGN #27 Brewco?] next year. The team may not hire a replacement driver since one of the car owners, Jim Smith, was [charged] this week and charged with illegally dumping hazardous materials at his chrome plating plant in California.(Augusta Chronicle) AND Atwood said he ''has heard reports'' about his job being in jeopardy but the 21-year-old driver said he has one year remaining on his contact and expects Evernham to honor it. ''As far as I know I'll be back. Ray hasn't told me anything different,'' Atwood said. ''We haven't talked about it.''(Tennessean)(10-6-2002)

I'm trying to decide if this is the most awful thing Ray Evernham has ever done, or something that might actually benefit Casey Atwood.

Lots of people think he was rushed to Cup. Would a year in Busch help him out any? Well, maybe if it were a full schedule. This rumor suggests otherwise.

Poor Casey. It must burn him that he hasn't had as fair a shot at contention as the other young guns. :headshake

I cannot believe that Atwood could be out of an evernham car by next year. I would have never and still dont think that Ray would give up on all of that Talent. I hope that he simply just starts a new car with a new team.

With thw problems at Smith's business, it wouldn't surprize me to see the team fold. I just hope that Ray is smart enough to keep Casey around. He has talent. Ray is a genius at developing talent. I think Casey got the short end of the deal this year. I'm not all that impressed with "Jaar-e-mee".

Ray Evernham was asked about this. His response would make me tend to believe that Casey has to improve as this season winds down.

''I've told you from the start that I consider Casey a bright young driver with a good future, and he's got six races to prove me right,'' Evernham said late Friday. ''I've spent a lot of money on him and I still believe in him.''

Actually, there are seven races remaining this season. If Atwood does not do well in the final races, beginning with today's EA Sports 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, will he be released?

''Just write what I told you,'' Evernham said. He declined further comment.

Pretty crappy since Casey showed more potential last year in the 19 car than Jeremy is.

Casey should either get back in the 19 or go back down to Busch. He should have been in the 19 this year, Ray screwed him over.

This is all Ray's fault. Casey and the 19 came together last year and started having good results. It's a shame Everham didn't stay there, I have a feeling if we did we would hear more about him. I hope Everham thinks about what he did and keeps the 7 team alive so Casey can get better.

I agree with you Bump Drafting he did do a better job than Mayfield had but I just dont think Atwood is ready for Winston Cup

More insight from the team from "The Sporting News"

Dodge has expressed its disappointment with the #7 team's performance this season. Casey Atwood's best finish this season was 11th, in June at Pocono, and he has been higher than 30th in points just once this season. "We're looking for the performance of this team to get better over the next six races," co-owner Jim Smith says. "Sirius is locked in for next year and wants to extend the contract, but they told us we need to make improvements." Atwood, 22, has hinted he would be happier back in the Busch Series, but he is under contract for another year. Smith says he and partner Ray Evernham have not discussed bringing in a replacement driver

Casey Atwood will make somebody a great Winston Cup Champion some day. If Evernham has a brain in his head, he'll keep the kid. If not, somebody will get the steal of the decade when they sign him and put him in something faster than a wheelbarrow. The kid can drive.
