STATESVILLE, N.C. -- NASCAR Winston Cup team owner Ray Evernham has informed driver Casey Atwood he is free to seek other employment options for 2003.

Casey Atwood

An Evernham Motorsports spokesperson Monday said Evernham, who plans to field a two-car Winston Cup team next season for drivers Bill Elliott and Jeremy Mayfield, indicated he would sit down with Atwood after the holidays and discuss the resolution of the final year of Atwood's contract.

Atwood, 22, drove Evernham's No. 19 Dodge in 2001. This season, he drove Jim Smith's No. 7 Dodge, in which Evernham became a partner to facilitate Atwood's continued development.

After Atwood struggled through 34 races, with a best finish of 11th and in 33rd in the driver standings, Smith released him and Evernham and Smith dissolved their partnership.

One of Smith's Craftsman Truck Series drivers, Jason Leffler, finished the season in the No. 7. No driver has been named for that car in 2003.

NASCAR Busch Series owner Clarence Brewer, for whom Atwood won twice in 1999 and in 2000 before he went to Evernham Motorsports, has said he would like to rehire Atwood pending the resolution of his deal with Evernham.

I expected to see Atwood back in the Busch series next year. I didn't like it but I expected it. I was kind of surprised to see that Jeremy Mayfield still sounds likely to be the driver of the #19 in this announcement. He is the one that should be job hunting in my opinion.

I agree Casey should have gotten the 19 car back.
But casey going back to BrewCo is cool with me. Wouldn't it be funny for Castrol to come back on Caseys car?
I look forward to the 2003 BGN series. It should be a great race for the championship between Keller and Wimmer, there might be a couple other names in there as well such as Hornaday.
Plus with the new Partnership between Brewco and MBV, both race teams should get ahold of the new Pontaic much faster.

A little off subject, but Wimmer was brought up. I wounder How Scott will be with Bootie leaving.

I don't know I like Scott he is my #2 BGN guy. I think he still will do pretty good, just might get off to a slow start with who ever is then new CC.

Ray hammered Casey pretty good. But I belive Casey will do good in Busch and a year or so he will be back in cup.

There must must be somthing were missing. It sure seems to me Atwood got a raw deal from Evernham.Maybe it's a personality clash?

You have a good point. Some people can handle stardom some can't. If that is the case then maybe a couple of years in Busch will help Casey to grow up some. I think he is the youngest driver in Cup.

i believe casey learned more than he realizes, he will show it in busch this year and probably end up with a limited schedule ride half way through the season, any takers?

I this deal is what he calls nurturing, I'd hate to have him not like me!!

hello, and welcome to our happy place. have you served in the military? if you have, you have my deepest thank you for protecting our freedom. it will never be free.

:Sorry it took so long getting back. Had to stop and watch Tony on the Today Show. Went pretty well.
To answer Your question, yes. Once a Jughead always a Jughead.
Thanks for the welcome!
Need to change my Aviator now.

Put the right equipment under him and I think he will excel in BGN next year.

Hopefully he can do something in the BrewCo and get his reputation back up.

He's still young and full of talent. I hope we see him in Cup again soon.
