I like to watch the races, that stems from me watching my brother race go-karts and later on 4 cylinder modified. However, it seems like auto racing is becoming more and more out of reach for the common man. I hear stories about how the (then) Winston Cups used to have guys who race the cars that they worked on from their 2 car garage. However, today it seems like even in the Whelen Modified, you would need a sponser to even be competitive. Is everyman's racinig still out there, or has that gone by the wayside as more and more racing become just like the Sprint Cup?

Back in the mid-70s, we did late model dirt track racing. Even then, you needed some sponsorship to help with the costs.

I rarely see even the local short-track boys without SOME sponsor on the car. Racing out of one's pocket looks like a thing of the past.

Well that sucks. I've been to the races at Concord Speedway and even the car there have some form of sponnsership.

Speedy, you missed out on some really fun racing if you didn't get to experience the old timers. I was thinking about how expensive the sport has become and after a long time thinking on this, I feel the blame goes to Roger Penske. The reason is that Roger was also involved in the much higher tech racing in USAC and later CART series, and since Roger had never won a championship in NASCAR, he wanted an upper hand and thus began to use the technology of the open wheeled cars, i.e. exotic metals. Of course, if Roger hadn't started it, someone else would have, but it might have been later coming. I can tell you that sponsorship indeed is needed in the Whelen Modified series, there are winners there that don't have major sponsors. But one thing is for certain, if you have a good sponsor who will give big money, your chances of winning are much better.

BTW, as you are aware, Richard Childress is a big time car owner who has three Cup cars and a gazillion dollars worth of cars and equipment. There was a time though that Richard worked on his own car that he raced, in his own garage right here in Winston Salem. But what is more crazy is that I believe it was Buck Baker, maybe another driver, who drove a showroom car to the track, slapped a number on it and raced it and won...with street tires.

Of how I pine for those old days when drivers were DRIVERS!

Concord Motorsports Park in Midland, NC seems to have a Pure Stock class. I may go watch that, the only modification allowed is safety modification.

I know that track is having it's problems so why not drive a few more miles down to Winston Salem and see some great racing. If not there, travel down to Caraway and see...no, they are having the same problems there. I love the track there at Concord but I've heard the owners suck just as bad as the owners of Caraway. C'mon down...or it is up? :beerbang:

It's up, and trust me I do plan to re-visit Bowman. I have to see how it compares in real life to "Madhouse".

Well considering to be competive on the Whelen Tour you need at least a Million to do the the entire season, I'd say yeh unless your racing street stocks.

when i was a kid one of our neighbors raced at the local dirt track. purely one man operation with help from family and friends that just liked working on the car (as in one and only). don't think he ever won a race or earned a dollar off racing but sure had some fun. no way anyone could do that now.

Gone are the days of dragging a car out of the junk yard, stripping it and going racing.
I showed my son where it would cost him around 22 grand to get started in a entry level street stock division.
Don't know anyone willing to sponser a unknown driver/car. Hard enough for established teams to get sponsered.

Guess you have never heard of Lemons racing, lemons as in the fruit and the term "your car is a lemon". Lemons racing is your car can't have cost you over 500 bucks, but as far as safety equipment goes (roll cage, brakes) you can spend as much as you need to make the car safe to race.

My car club has been doing a club track deal with Texas World Speedway at least once sometimes twice a year now for the past 6 years and thought it was off the hook, but now we have gotten into the Lemons racing and we're hooked. This is a great way for the everyday man to race on the cheap.

And if you win the race you win $1,500. in nickels.

Of course you are talking about the northern tour, but keep in mind that it was Burt Myers who beat the northern boys three out of four times in the last two years. Myers team has a good sponsor, but not anything like a million bucks. I would bet they don't receive more than 25 grand during the year. Probably the most costly thing on the cars after the initial cost is traction control...which is illegal. :D

Well I just discover the wonderful world of four cylinder stock racing. Not only Mini stock, but also Fast and Furious racing. I will have two local tracks to visit this summer. :D
