I love the start of spring training. It's the first real sign of spring. I don't love it as much as the start of the actual season, but it has to come first. Hope almost always springs eternal in spring training as it used to be that most every team thought they had a chance to compete in the new year. Unfortunately, baseball's worsening financial realities mean that very few teams actually have any realistic chance at competing for anything before the season even starts.
My hometown Indians actually spent some money on free agents this off season. The team just made a lot of money in selling it's own baseball network, Sports Time Ohio. They started STO a couple of years ago for the purpose of airing their own games on it. They sold it to Fox Sports a few months ago for like $250 million and they will reportedly get an additonal $10 million a year on top of that. I hoped they would invest some of that money into the product on the field, but I didn't have much confidence in them doing that. They surprised me and most everybody else around here by signing Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn recently. It was kind of expected that they would at least try to sign Swisher (an Ohio native and an Ohio State grad) with the money from Travis Hafner's expiring contract. He was making like $13 million a year or something crazy. But, the Bourn signing was a really pleasant surprise.
