thankfully, our only problems have been leaving first round.

Last sunday, our decal guy (Rick) broke his axle:

This saturday, he did this: (Carl missed the big shot, it went all the way on the bumper)

This Sunday, Walt (a corvette) did this:

We did our axle over winter...thankfully....

Apparently traction isn't an issue.
neither is too much power....Rick has a 509, we have a 505, Walt doesn't have "as much" power, with a mostly-stock driveline (stock block small block, but racing internals & heads, 3 speed auto, stock Vette rear), still hauls the mail footbraking.

Also, our friend Rhonda broke an oil pump (small block) 2 weeks ago, racing against us

And one of our friends in Crandall also broke an oil pump on his blower motor a few weeks ago (but won on Saturday with his spare)

Saturday, we went to back up for first round, and the car wouldn't go into reverse. After getting a meter, we found that we'd lost power. Apparently, when dad sat the steering wheel on the shifter, it shorted out and blew the dash fuse- dad somehow didn't notice that the whole dash was dead.
then on the run, we lost power at 600 feet and lost first round, turns out we only had 6psi of fuel pressure at 3000 RPM. Fuel filter was clogged solid.

on a lighter note, our new rims come in tomorrow.

The weakest link always breaks. It can get expensive eliminating all of the weak links, also makes for a short weekend.

no kidding. On top of all that, I've seen 3 axles break and 2 cars hit the wall. I was under one of them when the fuel line hit a battery post (the car only had 2 wheels left on it, to boot..I was under the side that was being supported by some 2x4's and a wheel dolley)

oh, another axle failure from 2 weeks ago. Had just built a new axle, and broke it second time out. Also footbraking.

After breaking axle said:
Well, it broke about 7 1/2 inches into my first pass. Rear u-joint shattered, ruined rear yoke of driveshaft, rear end housing looks bent and the list goes on. Great. Just great!

after rebuilding it said:
All NorthStar Dragway attendees May 28th 2011........first round of time trials......NoE....... Stand at least 250ft from the starting line area. I've put it all back together, but it is untested. If you recall the "land mine effect" of the last race, you will understand this warning. Eye protection is HIGHLY recommend!!!

Nice '62 Unibody. I have a set of 40 spline, full floating, gun-drilled axles in a Strange nodular case with a spool that had a boatload of horsepower run through it with no axle failures. The stuff isn't cheap, but it doesn't break.
These are hard to break...

dayum that makes em look big. I think Rick is the only one using strange, the rest of us are all moser. But we got the big OD high spline count, so we're not worried. Maurice runs 5.30-5.40 on a 1800 pound car, and snapped an axle on launch, mid-shaft. Not sure if he's moser or strange. But we're definitely finding the weak links.
