DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR announced Wednesday that two NASCAR Nextel Cup Series crew chiefs have been fined for infractions during last weekend's events at Michigan International Speedway.

Both violations were found during pre-qualifying inspection.

Tommy Baldwin, crew chief for the No. 9 Dodge driven by Kasey Kahne, was fined $10,000 for an unapproved front air dam extension, a violation of Section 12-4-1 (Actions detrimental to stock car racing) and Section 12-4-Q (parts and/or equipment that do not conform to NASCAR rules) of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series rulebook.

Jimmy Elledge, crew chief for the No. 41 Dodge driven by Casey Mears, was fined $1,000 for unapproved body modifications after inspection, a violation of Section 12-4-1 and Section 12-4-Q.

Why is Tommy Baldwin's fine so much more than Jimmy Elledge's? They both violated the same rules, Section 12-4-1, and Section 12-4-Q.

Tommy's was a bit more blatant. Question is why was Harvick's crew chief suspended and points taken away earlier this year and Baldwin simply got a monetary fine. Both were blatantly attempting to cheat the system with their contraptions.

So Kahne was fined $10K...<yawn>...that probably means he'll get back $40K once the fines are distributed. I'm real impressed.

In my opinion there is no comparison to the 29 team.

How so? Both were attempting to circumvent the rules. A spring loaded front valance? Is that what it was? Cheating is cheating to me. However had homeboy not opened his flapper and said to the effect yeah I was cheating, so what? I'd do it again too. That in itself what consitute a suspension for stupidity.

Amen, if he gets a return on his investment anything similar to the 97's he's gonna get at least forty grand. :)

Doesn't matter, Ganassi's paying.

Then I wander why Kahne and Mears wern't docked 25 points like all other drivers that hav teams have been caught cheating.

Maybe it has something to do with this.........

If the 29 team did not open their stupid ass flapper they would probably be in the same boat. Just like Dale Jr Spinning a car on purpose and talking about it on the radio. :D fines are handled acording to the situations at hand. When people say stupid things fines can get worse. You see players getting thrown out of football and baseball games for acting like idiots.....there you go.

So, regardless of the rules infraction, the penalty is based on what you say or brag about?

Then why the hell is Kurt Busch still behind the wheel of a car? How many times has he talked about knocking someone out of a race?

NASCAR seems to be very clear about the whole 'you need us, we don't need you' when it comes to the drivers. At least they talk that way. Who knows what really goes on, there's still a lot of "good ole' boy" networking that goes on in NASCAR.

Maybe one guy said the right thing a few weeks ago, while another may have just said; "eh, fuggit, I'm trying to win" ala the 29's crew chief during the whole gas tank drama. :) I dislike Harvick (being a 48 fan, that happens), but when I heard his crew chief's comments about that gas line I instantly went from dumb hatred to a lot of respect. That was priceless.

When things are great, Ray (where is the TV camera?) Evernham is in the spotlight and takes all the credit. When things go bad, it's all Tommy Baldwin's fault. Oh yeah!

Maybe because you can't stand him. :p

:beerbang:

I never even thought about that, but you are 100% correct. At least Baldwin doesn't do the same to Kasey. "Oh, well....we had a good car but Kasey screwed it all up!"
