I wore out my ATM card. I have been talked into getting a debit card that can be used at a ATM plus for POS, point of sale, purchases.

This card can only be used to access my funds in my checking account, it's NOT a credit card, got enough of them. It's simple enough. They'll give me the money at the ATM or pay the merchant with the money that's in my account. No money in the account, no pay and a penalty is charged.

So, why are they running a credit check???? How can I be denied access to my money using their piece of plastic if my credit sux, which btw it doesn't.

Granpa was right, under the mattress and screw the banks,,,

interesting....usually when you open an account, they almost force you to get a debit card.....if the low life scumbages here can get a debit card I doubt they run credit checks..

So I just called my bank, and they don't really run a "credit check" they run a SSN verification through the banking network to see if there is any banking fraud associated with that SSN.

Bucky, I have been a member of this bank since 1991, they have, for now, checking and savings. Since 1991 they have had payroll checks direct deposited and since 1995 my SS checks. They have issued 1099's on interest earned on savings/CD's since the first year.
And now they want to verify our SS numbers concerning fraud for a card that'll allow access to my own money??
<coughbull****cough>

I'm not upset, I'm PO'd. My wife has the perfect solution, we're stopping our direct deposits, pulling our cash, and going with her credit union.:)

SST, the card is just like a credit card. On the front you will no doubt see the words "Debit Card", but you will also more than likely see the Visa or Master Card logo. I is just as you say, only taking money from your account, but it doesn't matter where you use it, as long as they agree to take the credit cards. Believe me, if they don't take credit cards, they won't take your debit card either. Step into the 21st century. My guess is the bank looked at you and thought, hmmm, is this guy for real. ATM cards have been out of style for years. :)

never used a debit card or atm card in my life. personally i prefer the 20th century over the 21st. <g>

What's an ATM card?

And CU's are where it's at
Mag, before debit cards, there were ATM cards that only worked at ATM's. If a person didn't have a credit card, they would run to the ATM and withdraw cash. I agree with the CU's. I belong to three and none of them are here in NC. Just haven't changed yet.

And long before ATM cards you got paid in a little envelope with cash inside. :booya: Then came checks and the Friday night cattle call at the bank cashing your check. Not unusual to have 6 or more tellers at the bank, then the ATM's came along,,but don't worry all the tellers jobs are safe. Then came direct deposit and ATM cards. Now there's just one, maybe two tellers.
Yes, I liked the 20th century better too. Bought everything with cash. Even today the only thing I put on a card is major purchases, yes gas is now starting to be a major purchase. $90.00 yesterday, little over 3/4 of a tank....

Nothing is forcing you to use plastic. Dave Ramsey teaches people to use cash everywhere, and you can save money doing it that way. Take 10 hundred dollar bills in with you when you want to purchase an appliance, wave it in their face and see how far they will come down in price. Cold hard cash is something that most people like to have in their hands. Of course, you won't be able to haggle with that cashier at the gas station.

mmmmm, Cash is not king anymore unless you are working one on one with an owner of a small company. Sales people are just as happy to swipe your plastic.
