Barbeque

Okay, after a discusion at lunch the other day, my friends and I are mystified by the use of the word "barbeque".

From what we gather, American's use it mostly as a noun. Canadian's mostly a verb. Eg:
American way.
"Come on over for some barbeque tonight."
Canadian way.
"Come on over, we're going to barbeque some pork chops tonight."

So, are we right in thinking you guys use it that way? Or do you use it both ways?
12 hour shifts can be long and boring, if you're wondering why the hell we would be talking about something so trivial. ;)

I use it both ways, steve. I never thought about it before. LOL

Actually, though, I think I say "grill" more. As in --- I'm going to grill some steaks.

To me, barbeque means slow cooking with marinade or sauce.

Okay, fair enough. I never thought of barbeque in that way, but it makes sense too. My Barbecue is just a propane grill. Just not right, is it? Lol!!
I'd like to hear what more American's have to say on this. Maybe it's a regional thing. I'm going out on a limb and assuming you're from Texas, TRL?

i use the word barbecue as verb all the time. I don't know if its because I'm from California or some other reason. To me, a "grill" has always been a barbecue and you use it to barbecue. That's just what my parents always said...they also used the word as a noun to describe a social gathering where barbecuing took place. My Turkish students also used the term barbecue in this way...just FYI.

I'm with TRL on this one, I grille steaks and barbeque chicken and ribs.

To me, barbeque used as a noun is chopped up pork covered with barbeque sauce. Barbeque used as a verb is cooking anything on the grill with barbeque sauce. Wow, that made me sound smart. :D

steve, you get a gold star! Yes, I live in Texas --- my family came to Texas in 1850. LOL

My grill is electric. I know there are some people who would faint dead away at the thought of using anything but charcoal, but, I want to cook my steaks in a reasonable amount of time. I don't like waiting for charcoal to get to the proper stage.

My grandfather was a purist --- nothing but charcoal. But I do have to admit, his ribs were things of beauty.

I have 3 grills, 2 charcole and one propane.
If I cook meat on any one of them, I barbecue it.
However, I also "smoke" things on my propane grill by adding hicory chips and using the lowest heat possible.
To me, to grill something would be a grilled cheese sandwich or a patty melt.

Well, sorry kat, but I have to also go with TRL's description of how I use the term barbeque. I grill my steaks and barbecue chicken and ribs, same as bowtie. Barbeque is done by slow cooking the meat, and grilling is for burgers and steaks.

Good lord son, we have to get you some good ol' Eastern NC BBQ. Once you've wrapped your lips around that you would never think of putting BBQ sauce on your chopped pork again.

Now I can eat that concoction from SC made with mustard as long as I tell myself that this is a pork dish, not BBQ. Once I do that it is really quite good. But, that mess they serve in Western NC with the sauce is absolutely horrid. BBQ sauce is for my chops, chickens, ribs, etc. Even some beef if done properly.

As to the terms, I use the term 'grill' to refer to cooking out. Barbecue is a noun. Although I've heard it used as a verb just not so much in these parts.

I use the term barbecue both ways when referring to food. But never when referring to a steak!! One may put barbecue sauce on a steak, but the only way to cook a steak is on a grill!! :) That goes for fish too. Save the barbecuing for the chicken, pork, briskets, and vegetables. :)

Must be a regional thing :beerbang:

Just sear that steak, on the grill, slap it 'till it doesn't moo, RARE please!

We do it Texas style in La. I grill, BBQ, and smoke with charcoal. Propane is used for frying turkeys. lol

Fried Turkey is the BEST, and the only problem is that you can't stuff them.
I much prefer stuffing to dressing. I stuff the bird (my Nana's recipe) nuke it 'til close to done, then put it in the oven to brown and crisp it up. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
