I set the DVR to record the new series Bates Motel. We (my wife, youngest daughter and my son and I) watched the first episode yesterday. My oldest daughter watched the first 20 minutes or so and decided that she didn't want anything to do with it and that we were all disturbed for wanting to watch it. She doesn't watch The Following with us either for the same reason, but I digress.

The first episode was really strange and creepy and extremely entertaining, except for one scene where I could have done without quite as much realism as my 15 yr old daughter was watching it with us. I am really excited to see the next episode. New episodes air on Monday nights at 10pm on A&E. They are re-airing the original episode, "First You Dream, Then You Die" fairly regularly so you can still watch it from the beginning.

It is, of course, based on characters from the movie "Psycho". It is set in modern times, but Norman Bates is age 17 at the beginning of the series. Freddie Highmore plays Norman. Vera Farmiga plays his mother, Norma. I don't recall seeing her in anything else before, but she seems pretty much perfect for this role. All of the acting in the first episode was really good.

If you aren't watching it, you should check it out.

If you are watching it, what do you think?

I'm watching it as well. Yes, they could have changed that scene and still ended up with the desired results. Good so far though.

If anybody watched the second episode, what did you think?

I thought was an interesting concept of where the series may be going.

Outside the strip club, when they showed the car with the packages I assumed that was drugs but seriously, the whole town is in on that? Totally unexpected. The man hung, burning, in the center of town. Totally unexpected. Hiking up into the forest, a field of pot. Again, totally unexpected. Can't wait for the next one!

I agree on all counts. I kind of saw the Emma thing (the girl with CF) coming, but I didn't see it happening this soon. I expected them to drag on a 'her vs Bradley' sort of competition a little longer before he ended up kissing Emma. It sort of seemed like he would be with Bradley first and then realize he should have been with Emma all along. It's a pretty often used plot line. But, they definitely don't seem too fond of typical plot lines. I'm definitely digging the show so far.
