Before Safety Equipment

I raced in a modified using one of those yellow/orange fiberglass seats you saw in bus stations.

I really think the chances of a fatality or even serious injury in a properly prepared race car today and with all the latest safety equipment is extremely low if not nil. Not to say it couldn't happen though.

Guess drivers had alot shorter careers back then. About as crazy as those Motorcycle racers.

As morbid as it may seem, this is what auto racing to our hearts. Daredevils in the racing machines, defying death at every turn. It packed fairgrounds and kept the audience riveted. While we applaud the safety aspect of the modern racing machine, it now lacks some of the appeal that filled the country back when some of these videos were shot.
