No, I'm not buying. But I wonder what some opinions are on what the best car is for under $50,000.

You couldn't pay me enough to buy a new car today. I'm actively seeking a pre-90's full sized station wagon. I've got a line on a 88 Safari. 307 with a quadrajet.

All today's cars are computer controlled for 'efficiency', but what they've really done is saddle us with multiple useless systems designed to do nothing but monitor parts build to the worst acceptable standards. But the monitors and sensors usually fail long before the systems they're monitoring. And they've built them in a fashion that requires proprietary tools in an attempt to force the owners back to servicing at the dealerships. Why does the Malibu require a 5 sided socket to change the oil filter? Why is the GM scantool required to service their ABS brakes? No good reason.

For sheer comfort and room --- a Lincoln Town Car.

I've had 5 and have loved every one of them.
I have had one new Lincoln Town Car and you are correct, they are very comfortable, especially on a long trip. Today's cars, almost any manufacturer, are the best built cars since they started building cars, IMHO.

Fifty grand can buy you a number of great cars and it all depends on what you are looking for. You want comfort, looks, performance or just popularity, it's a hard decision for sure. As an older person, my preference is sure to be different than a 25 year old. I'm open to these models, Cadillac CTS, DTS and STS, Lincoln MKX or Towncar, Just about any Lexus, Infinity, Mercedes or Audi that fit the category. I might even choose a BMW. One can even find a nice Jag or Porche that will fit this category. Now my mind is going crazy trying to make a choice. Then there is my youth showing up and a Ford Shelby GT500. Okay, now that I've thought about it, give me the GT500. I can take a few tickets yet before they can take away my license. :beerbang:

Come on admit it. You are too old for a Shelby. Same as I am too old for a Porsche. Of the cars Buckaroo posted I lean towards:

BMW - 5 Series
Mercedes - E320
Town Car
CTS

The BMW and Mercedes are nice handling cars, but as TRL says, the Town Car is a beaut for comfort.

Whoa Newt, she's a buckin'! You might be too old for a performance car, but I won't give up my youth card just yet. Yes, I now pretty much drive the speed limit on the Interstate, but fer cryin' out loud, it's the car that I drive out there. My regular car, a Dodge Stratus R/T is fine for in town, but I've been behind a Roush Stage 3 Mustang not long ago and I fell in love. I would go for a GT 350, but what the heck, you put the top price at fifty grand and I found a GT 500 for 47K. Hey, just the sound of that car idling gives me goosebumps.

This right here.... It's my next vehicle when I get rid of my Ford Explorer...

It's a Ford Sport Trac... very nice!

I'd have to say the that if I had that kind of budget for a new car my first trip would be to a Mercedes dealership. The E350 is a gorgeous vehicle that you can get for $45k. The C300 Luxury Sedan is a very sweet ride too for about $33k.

I handled my share of Mercedes in my career in the tire and repair industry. They just handle exceptionally well and they just ooze comfort, quality and luxury.

The only offering from the big three that really turns my crank is the new Charger. Those look great and the RT AWD with 368hp would be a lot of fun to drive.

My brother is a Buick nut and his wife drives a Lucerne that is a really nice ride too. Lots of luxury and a really nice ride although it isn't really in the same class as the other cars I've mentioned as far as handling and power are concerned.

This one isn't mine but the exact twin to the one I bought new when I got out of the service. If I could find one for 50k it'd be in the driveway.:)
50k is only about 12 times what it sold for new,

Hey, are telling me I can't dream? If I'd known that, well, I'll just go over to the corner and cry. BTW, the second car I bought after the service was a Porche. A 914 but still a Porche. Loved that car and it would scoot.

Let's see, probably the most expensive car I've owned is my Buick Rendezvous, but it was well short of the fifty grand. My real first car only cost me $35.

Here's my hot rod that I drive today 2004 Dodge Stratus R/T

BTW, that is not my car but one exactly like it.

I love the Studebaker. I never tire of looking at photos of the old cars with character.

My first car was 4 or 5 years old (memory) 1951 Ford. The second car I owned was a used 1952 Ford.

Unreal how "close"we are. I had 48 Studebaker Commander with the BIG six.
Car had self adjusting brakes and a hill holder. Come up to a light at the top of a hill, clutch in, hit the brake and until the clutch came up to where it grabbed and you started moving forward the brakes were locked. Car was way ahead of it's time,,,I rolled that puppy over. My first rollover, I was so proud...
Had a 51 Ford, 3 speed & flathead 6. Buick portholes in the hood with flames, had to have flames, coming out. My Mom drove that car for 2 years after I went in the service before it died, bought it for 10 bucks cash money .:beerbang:
05 Silverado ext cab, 6.5 bed V-619 mpg city, black, chrome wheels. Looking at a 2010, just looking though.

:) My first car was a 1942 (yes, 1942 according to the title) Ford business coupe. Paid $100.00 for that flathead V8 with 100 horsepower. I wish I had some pictures of that one.
