Best current driver in F1

I saw a poll of various F1 car owners , former drivers , even some current drivers , that said the best driver currently in F1 is Fernando Alonso . I think this is the second or third time he's won this poll .

Can't disagree with that, this season has been a fine example of Alonso's talent. Two wins (from 11th and 8th) and the point lead with a car that isn't up to typical Ferrari standards. I'd say Alonso for sure.

Looks like Alonso as far as I'm concerned. Don't like him, but his recent run to the front from the back have been pretty breathtaking.

I agree 100%. Alonso is showing his talent in a big way this year. It's nice to see him back at the top.

Alonso. A perfect example of a guy who gets more out of his equipment that anyone else. And he just rarely makes mistakes. Also he tends to get great starts. If Alonso had been in a Redbull last year he may have won every damn race and pole.

On a side note, I used to not like Alonso. I became a Ferrari fan because of Schumacher. When Alonso came to Ferrari I started pulling for him. And I still pull for Schumacher. I wonder if when Gordon retires I will pick a new driver or just start pulling for Hendrick teams.

I won't disagree with anyone on this, but one thing remains a fact, or maybe two. Equipment is everything and team orders can change everything.

In most cases I would agree. But it's no mystery this year that Ferarri has been below par this year. Alonso though has been on fire even so.

Michael Schumacher

For real? He can't get it done in any way shape or form this year.

Alonso can get things done in a pig of a car that Ferrari started out with. The car may have gotten better, but Alonso is the driver with the most finess.

He has the best skill set and knows how to use it.

Alonso is the best imo. I have always admired the talent going back to his title runs.
2nd is Vettel and I mean close, on the right day I might call him the best. He is fast and easy on the tires.
3rd Hamilton when he is in the zone, he is incredible. But I think he is hard on the tires, and he hot dogs himself into confrontations.

I think Button's stock has fallen some this year. I liked his smoothness and ability to make the tires last, but this year he hasn't matched Hamilton's pace. Maybe that will change with the Germany event, I think McClaren is bringing a lot of modifications to the race.

He has sure been putting on a show this year . Pretty early yet to make a prediction , but i wouldn't bet against him for the championship . The only possible issue is that the Ferrari still isn't fast enough , the success so far has been from Alonso winning in a third place car . Give Alonso a true first place car and the championship will be a runaway .

Alonso gets it done again. He did a masterful job at saving his tires. He'd allow them to close but never to wear they could mount a credible attempt at a pass. Amazing effort.

Vettel was penalized 20 seconds for passing off course.

PosDriverNationalityTeamPoints
1 Fernando Alonso Spanish Ferrari 154
6 Nico Rosberg German Mercedes 76
14 Felipe Massa Brazilian Ferrari 23
16 Bruno Senna Brazilian Williams-Renault 18
18 Daniel Ricciardo Australian STR-Ferrari 2

I think it's funny how Vettel had all the special treatment he could get last year, and now, he might be the number two if Mark can get things sorted out.

Alonzo for sure... but if Nigel Mansell were still around he would give them all a good run.

There's no doubt that Alonso's good but I still like Vettel better. I think the championship is still pretty open right now but we'll see how things go in Hungary. In my mind Schumi is still the best the sport has ever seen but he hasn't been doing great since his return.

I disagree. There were quite a few times when Vettel would leave Webber in the dust last season. I know he finished well but it was Vettel who dominated the season.

Hows he doing this year compared to Webber?

Being the thread is titled "Best driver of this season."

A lot of people are wondering how much of Vettel's success is the car and how much is the driving . The Red Bull car was the one to beat , by a long way over the last few years . Now it seems they get caught almost weekly with rule bending tricks . I wonder how many of those " tricks " weren't caught during his championships .
Overall , there has been a difference in performance between the two Red Bull cars , Weber has said he thinks a lot of the good parts went to Vettel

Hamilton was better also when he was running a McLerrari during his rookie season than the current version. The thing that helps make Alonso better is how he has been able to upgrade the Ferrari. He got a win in the early in the season when they still suffering performance wise.
Alonso is also aging well or maturing, some don't improve with time. He has always been fast, but now he seems more focused or able to avoid the non value added dramas.

Hamilton's performance has been up and down over his career, though like Alonso, he's never really been slow. I noticed that Shumy just said in an interview that Alonso is the best current driver in F1. High praise!

Sergio Perez has been showing some serious talent lately. Anybody got any thoughts on him?

Vettel is making a case. My heart is with Alonzo but he did lose a title to Vettel before by going defensive for points, while Vettel was going for the win and it paid off for Vettel.
It looks hauntingly similar this year. Losing the big point lead may be better for Alonzo, maybe he will be more aggressive now.

I voted for Alonzo as the best, but I was thinking our discussion would be more divided or a toss up between Hamilton and Vettel, I think good arguments can be made for either one. Vettel drove well in his maiden stint for an injured Kubica, and he won in a Torro Rosso, prior to joining Red Bulls best team.
