Best Pit Crew Ever?

Well it sure has been quiet around here with the off week...
O.K. kids here's a question for you, drivers and crew cheif always seem to get all the attention but some of the real heros of a team are the guys who run over the wall to fuel and change tires. Who in you opinion is the best crew of over the wall guys ever? In all honesty I can only think of the "rainbow warriors" for Ray Evernham...who else?

When I read this that was my first thought also....has to be the Rainbow guys under Ray's direction!

Any discussion of pit crews must begin and end with the Wood Brothers in the 1970s. They revolutionized racing and changed forever the role of the pit crew. Until they came along, time on pit road was never taken seriously. Pit stops could last as long as seven or eight laps on the short tracks. Folks didn't worry about it, because they knew everyone else would take just as long when their time came around. Glen and Eddie Wood put a stop to that. It's unclear exactly how many races they won by beating everyone in the pits.

While I have to give a nod to the Wood Bros., I'd say it's a tie between the Flying Aces and Ray's Rainbow Warriors.

Surprised no one has mentioned the Dewalt boys yet.

I'm going to take a very huge leap of faith and say the 8 crew headed by Tony Eury Sr.

The crew only, Tony Eury makes crappy decisions

I'm going with EMP here........someone lost his marbles in his last post!! :D

And on the question...........I'm going to go with the DeWalt crew!! Those guys make 13 second pit stops almost every race........other crews can only drool at the thought of equaling the 17 crew's consistant performances. And they have been getting better too!! :)

The Rainbow Warriors were the best I've ever seen. But, I'm sure I'm not overly objective here being a JG fan. ^_^

That Dewalt crew is pretty amazing as current teams go.

Well I'm partial to Jr...........but his pit crew just ain't what they need to be! Their best stops are just almost average for the DeWalt crew. Jeffy's old Rainbow Warriors were good.............but the DeWalt crew wasn't around back then either. I don't think the Rainbow guys would have managed to beat the DeWalt guys. All moot though, Rainbow Warriors aren't around anymore and the DeWalt guys were around back then. A fantasy match up for some computer whizzes maybe? :D

The Wood Bros. were the originator's but I am going with Evernham's Rainbow Warriors. With Kenseth's current team being a close second.

How many sub 13 second, four tire stops did the Warriors make? I know the DeWalt guys did it about a half dozen times last season and I'm pretty sure they have done it a couple times already this season! I'm sticking with the 17 crew!!

The Wood Brothers. They invented the modern pit stop and, by comparison, made it work with "crude" equipment.

Oh man I thought you neat me to it...but remember those old equipment they worked with and the chnage the brought upon the sport. Imagine any of todays team memebers growing up back then and coming together like the Woods. Never happen.

I don't believe that any times for pit stop stops were kept years ago but...if a person added up all the 4 tire and gas stops and took an average from that, then compared the average against all the other team averages of that year, maybe that team would have been the best - that year. By how far they outdistanced the the next closest team might tell you who was the most dominant.

On the other hand, would the best pit crew be the one who keeps their driver off of pit road for the longest time...compared to the other teams?

13 second stops are cool but if a lug nut is not tighened or a wrench/catch can left in the car then who cares how fast the stop was? I'd rather wait an extra 2 seconds to get the wrench out of the car.

It seems foolish to compare times from different years when it's fairly obvious that time wasn't always emphisized as it is today. Also, carrying a 50lb jack 20 years ago is not that same as carrying 10 lb jack today. I'm not sure on the weights but I know there's a big difference.

Too me it's like comparing who's the best driver of all time. If drivers drive for wins then isn't the guy who has won the most races the best of all time?

No question, of all time, the Wood Brothers deserve the most consideration.

Although they were the first to implement the "quick pit stop", they were the first to continue it and were not just a "flash in the pan". They were the real deal. It took other teams what seemed like years, to get even close to producing pit stops like the ones the Wodd Brothers consistently put out.

The "flying Aces" were the best under the conditions of thier time. They were not consistently quick on every pit stop, although they were the most accurate. They were good enough to be considered for an honorable mention, but this group was certainly not the best ever.

Then came the "Rainbow Warriors" under the tutlege of Ray Evernham. Now here was innovation. These guys were drilled, schooled, required to perform daily weight lifting and practice drills. A system was implemented to study other teams and thier own motion in action, to improve. This team took the standard to a new high and continued to hold the bar higher for the others longer than any other team until the ..........................................
DeWalt Demons began pushing out under thirteen second pit stops on a regular basis.

Who is the best overall ??? In my opinion, it would be a tie between the Wood Brothers for the idea and continuing it and the Rainbow Warriors for innovation and keeping up the gig for as long as they did.

The DeWalt Demons have to prove themselves over the long haul and yes, I know, they are into thier second year of fast stops but let's wait and see what happens for about three more years as time and the constant pressure can obliterate the team cohesion.
The DeWalt Demons are the best today, but not the best of all time.
