There are a large number of good races these days considering teams are fairly equal thanks to NASCAR's policy on common templates, harder inspections and the fact most teams command no less than a fifteen million dollar annual budget. This levels the playing field considerably to give a team that would not have been competitive for a win in the past, greater opportunity to sit in victory lane. Except at Daytona and Talledega. Exciting, yes, but not real racing.

Martinsville and Bristol with Richmond, Dover, Rockingham and Darlington followed by the flat tracks in close proximity for good racing, are a return to the roots of what most fans know as "Saturday night shootout style racing". When a driver wins on a short or flat track it is 99% sure it wasn't a fluke. It was earned. By good driving, luck and great pits stops. IOW's, a full-press team effort.

Good races are not the result of emotional timing like those won by Harvick, Dale Junior or the win by Ward Burton. Those were emotional and popular victories. The final laps and drive put on by Kurt Busch with the win going to Ricky Craven are what good races are all about.

Apparently Gordon and Earnhardt were friends off and on the track.
Earnhardt was facinated by anyone he considered a threat to beat him in a race or to the championship. He saw that in Gordon and what made it more interesting is that at the track, both Earnhardt and Gordon shared driving tips.
Off the track, they had partnerships ( I don't know how many ) in business enterprises. :D
